~ THE NEXT MORNING ~

Aliza and Zaire eventually got their rooms, which are only down the hall from mine. Dylan had taken them to meet Izzy, which went well by what I heard.

Aliza had made some friends, and is supposed to start at the tiny school that we have here.

Zaire showed some interest in the building job, so I bet he's gonna choose that when he gets the chance.

Right now, I'm heading out to one of the sniper towers, and now that I think about it, walking was a bad idea. The temperature today is really high, I think it's September or somewhere around that time, so that explains it. Thankfully, I was set to be on the closest one, so I only needed to walk for a few more minutes.

When I made it to the water tower, I quickly climbed up and sat down on the chair, leaving the sniper to lean against the wall.

I only need to check every twenty minutes on my shift, since the other posts check in separate intervals, which cover for others when we're not checking.

Complicated system.

I came up with it.

Why?

I was bored.

While I sat there staring off into the sky, I set up the miniature CD player, and let the music play.

 Suffocate everything

They complicate everything

They seal your fate every day but you can't believe it

Take yourself far away from nothingness

A million miles from emptiness

Suffocate everything

They complicate everything

They seal your fate every day but you can't believe it

Take yourself far away from nothingness

A million miles from emptiness

Remember the days of the innocence

Before it came in waves

Remember the trust it was blown away

Into oblivion

Remember love

Remember hate

Remember everything they said jus--

"Jaiden?" My radio crackled.

I sighed and turned off the music and clicked the button, "What now?" I asked.

"Got some movement down by the old mall," Marcus said.

"I'll check it out," I stated.

I got out of the chair and propped the gun onto the railing, aiming the scope, trying to focus it on any movement.

"You sure it was a person?" I asked.

"I don't think walkers purposefully crouch and run around," He stated.

I swiveled the gun back and forth and located some type of movement.

"See 'em? " He asked.

I kept my eyes traced on the four people as they ran around the side of the building.

"Looks like they're searching for something," I stated.

"Maybe that something is a someone," He said.

I followed their movements, then I was dragged up to the roof by another person crouching behind a pillar, a rifle in their hand.

"Watch the roof," I ordered.

The people stopped as another person ran out of the mall doors, racing towards the woods that now surrounded it.he others chased after him and caught up to him easily and tackled him to the ground. They sat the now crying man on his knees, as somebody spoke to him. The man speaking became rigid and a wide smile crept across his face. He reached down and plucked his gun from his belt, and swiftly shot the man in the head.

"What the actual fuck," Marcus mumbled.

"I want everyone to keep their eyes open, no breaks until your shift is over. We got company in the East." I ordered.

I continued watching the people as the man on the roof began hanging up a flag and tagging it, marking it with a symbol. When he finished, a circle with a line going through it was painted on the pillar.

"What do you think that means?" Marcus asked.

"Maybe it's just a mark saying they were there," I said.

"What if... I don't know, but I don't like these guys," Marcus stated.

"I'm gonna head back and grab some things," I stated.

"You are not going out there with those psychos?" He asked in shock.

"I wanna see what I can find out," I stated.

"You're gonna get yourself killed," He said.

"I've heard that before, and look what happened," I retorted.

"You have a death wish," He said.

"But actually, will you cover for me, you know, while I'm out making sure we don't get attacked," I said.

"Yep," He answered.

"Yep," I repeated in his voice.

"Bye J," He said.
