heartbreaker

i stare up at my ceiling while listening to carolina by harry styles as i wait for maurine to come barging through my door.

luke got on my nerves yesterday. at first, i wasn't considering maurine's plan at all. but once i heard luke talk about girls the way he did, once i heard his cockiness and his overflowing self confidence, i actually felt motivated to listen to maurine's plan.

and, of course, when he pulled that phone number stunt with me.

he treats girls like they're objects. he looks at girls like they're some medals or trophies he can boast about to his friends.

and once he's done boasting about them, he simply leaves them some place to collect dust.

fuck no.

i begin to hear fast and heavy footsteps climbing up my stairs. the door to my room opens widely, and i see my best friend with the biggest grin on her face.

"oh my goodness, vada, call me crazy but i'm so fucking excited for this." maurine says the second she enters my room, panting probably because of how fast she ran up my stairs.

she closes the door and walks closer to my bed as i pause my music.

"let's hear it." i say, sitting down upright on my bed to make space for her.

"i planned everything out. i wrote everything down on my notebook during homeroom and i'm pumped." she says, plopping down on my bed. she begins to empty the contents of her backpack, dumping them all down on my bed.

chapstick, two ballpens, her math notebook, and a plain black journal.

i extend my hand to grab the notebook, but she swats my hand away.

"wha-"

"not so fast, vada, you need to make a promise first," she clutches the notebook to her chest as she points at me, "before we start this thing for real."

"what?" i say, already noticing how serious maurine is about this.

"you need to promise to not tell anyone about this. this only stays between the two of us." she starts.

"well, i wanna tell ashton about this. you two are my best friends, and i can't keep anything from you guys, you know that," i say, scratching the back of my head, "plus, ash always knows when we're hiding something. we can't keep this from him."

"yeah, okay, understood," maurine nods, "but only ash, okay? if other people find out about this, i'm disowning the both of you as my best friends."

"yeah, i promise." i say, nodding.

"next, you will also have no other agendas on this mission. the only agenda you should have is to break luke's heart and that's that. promise?" she says, extending her pinky.

"duh, it's not like i want to fall in love with him." i shudder, then extend my pinky, too.

maurine and i pinky swear, then she smiles.

"okay, you can read." she says, giving me the black journal. i open it up to the first page and begin reading.

PHASE ONE: THE INTRODUCING

in this phase you will know about luke hemmings and vice versa. you will begin to go on dates and learn more about each other. this is the start of everything, and you must make this start strong. you also have to make sure that luke is not talking to other girls aside from you.

tip: do something other girls haven't done for him yet, to set you aside from them.

i try to hide a scoff as i finish reading phase one. maurine's really serious about this.
