14 DAYS BEFORE PROM

"how could you forget the marshmallows, mate?" michael groans at ashton, "make it make sense!"

"i knew i was forgetting something," ashton murmurs back as he continues rummaging through his duffel bag, "i must've fucking left it on the kitchen counter."

"you had one job, mate," michael sighs, "to bring the fucking marshmallows. how are we supposed to have a campfire without marshmallows then, huh?"

"mate, calm down," calum chuckles, "there's still plenty of food to go around."

michael slumps down on the side of the tent, obviously still upset that ashton forgot to bring the marshmallows.

luke laughs softly next to me, causing me to turn my attention towards him.

"michael's acting like it's the end of the world or something." he says quietly next to me, so michael won't hear.

"guys, the bonfire's ready!" maurine says, peeking her head through the opening of the tent.

"c'mon, kids," calum says, standing up, "it's gonna be a great night."

i don't want to do this anymore.

the guilt is eating me up so much.

ever since luke told me about why he does what he does, about how scared he is to have his heart broken, i completely lost interest in this whole thing.

i just have to tell maurine.

"maurine?" i ask, walking over to her as she stays seated down with a blanket wrapped around her, "can we talk?"

it's currently 10pm now, and people have started doing their own thing.

some people have gone in their separate tents doing you-already-know what, some people are just chilling around the bonfire, like michael who's been playing his guitar non stop, while some people have started to make their own conversations in their own little corners.

"of course, v," she says, scooting over to make space for me, "what's up?"

i take a seat next to her and exhale, immediately feeling the warmth coming from the fire.

my hands stay cold as fuck because of how nervous i am, though.

"don't get mad at me for what i'm about to say, alright?" i start, "hear me out."

"of course, vada," she says, smiling slightly, "what is it?"

"i don't...." i sigh again, trying to look for the right words, but settle on the number one thought in my mind, "i don't think i can do this anymore."

"can't do what anymore?" she asks, her eyebrows immediately furrowing.

"you know," i say softly, "the mission."

she stays silent at first, a look of pure shock painted on her face.

"what?" she says, "why? are you joking, vada?"
