All of my breath left my lungs as Brendon collapsed to the floor. He was unconscious. I wanted to do something, but I felt like I couldn't move. All sounds were being drowned out and I felt like I was being held underwater. I had to snap out of it.
"Get. Away. From. Him," I yelled in Steve's face and pushed him out of my way. He stumbled back and tried to shove me, but I slammed my fist into his chest and watched him cower away.
Brendon was out cold. He wasn't moving at all. "Brendon, oh my god, Brendon please wake up. You're going to be okay, baby. Just open your eyes, please," I felt tears beginning to form in my eyes, but I wasn't paying attention to them. "Somebody, please go get the nurse," I shouted and watched as no one stopped what they were doing. "God, please, someone help me," I sobbed as I lifted Brendon's head into my lap.
"Oh my god, what happened," Jack came rushing over as soon as he'd rounded the corner. "St-steve clocked him in-in the jaw, and he just- he went down. No one is helping. I need someone to get like a-a stretcher or something so we can get him to the clinic and nobody is stopping," I cried, brushing back some of Brendon's hair and hoping for any sort of response from him.
Jack rubbed his hand in circles on my back as my shoulders shook from crying. "Hey, calm down. He's going to be okay. I'll go talk to the nurse. I just need you to stay here and keep him safe," he told me. I nodded and thanked him.
Brendon still hadn't come to after 10 minutes of Jack being gone, and I felt a pit growing in my stomach. "Hey, the nurse wants to call an ambulance because he's still out just to be sure that he's okay, and she's coming down here with a stretcher," Jack came over to me panting. I nodded but gasped as soon as I felt Brendon stirring.
"Brendon, hun, are you awake," I spoke quietly as my voice shook. His eyebrows furrowed, and he tried to open his eyes. "Bren, baby, I need you to answer me," I told him. "What happened, D," he asked, his eyes still shut. "Since when does he-" I waved my hand to get Jack to shut up. "Steve knocked you out. Does your head hurt?" He nodded lightly. "Okay, B. The nurse is on her way." He whimpered as I helped him sit up a bit. "Sorry," I whispered.
He was sitting in my lap, hugging onto me when the nurse came over. "Is he awake?" I nodded and she kneeled down next to me so she could talk to Brendon. "Hi, Brendon," she started, but he nuzzled his head into my neck. "Bren, you have to sit up now," I told him.
"I'm going to take you to the clinic to check for signs of a concussion, but you should be okay, Brendon," Nurse Ellie told him. He nodded against me. "Come on, Bren, let's go," I said, helping him into the wheelchair. "D-Dallon," he started, his hand shaking as he grabbed onto my arm. "Yeah, B?" His other hand gripped the chair. "I don't-I don't feel good." I nodded and pushed him slowly behind the nurse. "I know, honey. We're going to get you home so that you can lay down and rest." He shook his head quickly and almost gagged from the pain and dizziness that he was faced with.
"M-my dad- he might be- what if he's- Dallon, w-what if he's th-th-ther-re," he was gripping my arm tightly as he spoke. I stopped the chair and gently kneeled down in front of him. He looked so pale and terrified. "Bren, I can take you back to my house if you want. Would you feel better about that," I suggested. He immediately started freaking out about not wanting to intrude or inconvenience me. "Hey, I know you like my bed, and I'd love to be able to take care of you at my house," I assured him. "Are you s-sure, Dallon? I-I-I can just g-go home or-or stay here," his breath seemed to be caught in his throat as he spoke. "I want you to come home with me so that I can take care of you, B. I promise." He calmed down enough for me to start pushing him again.
The nurse said that he didn't show any signs of a concussion and that he would be fine. Brendon told me that he wanted to stay at school, but I made him come home with me. We walked up the stairs to my room, and I lifted him onto my bed. "I sh-should've stayed at-at school," he told me, shaking his head and wincing. "No you shouldn't have, B. You need to rest." He went to retaliate but closed his eyes and sighed. "Thank you for making me leave," he said, yawning a bit. Something about my room made him tired.
"You're welcome. Do you want to take a nap?" He nodded and payed no mind to the blush dusting his cheeks. "Because we're like dating or-or whatever, can I lay my head on y-y-you again," he mumbled, the red coloring spreading over his cheeks and deepening. I grinned. "Of course, precious." He smiled sheepishly and waited for me to get on the bed.
"Is this okay," I asked him as he positioned himself on top of me. He only hummed in response. I ran my fingers through his hair as he snuggled further into me. "You can take your shoes off, hun," I told him, watching him trying to get his feet comfortable. "Thanks." I nodded, and he sat up to put his shoes on the floor. Pretty soon he was back in his spot, laying his head on my chest.
