School started back today, and Brendon was excited to see his friends because they'd all been out of town or working over break. He had told me multiple times that he had a great spring break because he got to spend it with me and my family, but I could tell that he missed Jack a lot. He had been texting with Jack, but it wasn't the same as seeing him in person. I was excited to go back to school too but for a very different reason. I had a plan that would make Brendon's first day back even better. I needed to stall Brendon while Spencer and Nick set everything up for me at school. Today, I was prom-posing to Brendon.
Spencer was setting up a banner in the courtyard that would be released by someone pulling a cord that would cause the banner to fall down and balloons to fall from the rafters. I'd gotten special permission from the dean of students to set everything up. She was really accommodating and understanding anytime Brendon had an issue, so she was more than happy to help me with my prom-posal because it meant that Brendon was doing well. I had Nick setting up pots of sunflowers in a path leading from the library to where I'd be standing in the courtyard. Jack was in charge of distracting Brendon while I went to change into a tuxe and got to the courtyard. I trusted Jack to do this because Brendon missed him a lot over break and was easily distracted anyway.
"Dallon, wake up! I w-want to get to school," Brendon whined, shaking my shoulders. "Ugh, B, what time is it," I groaned. "It's alr-ready 6:30," he said. I rolled over so I was hovering over him. "Exactly, flower. It's too fucking early," I told him, leaning down to kiss him. He kissed back softly but pulled away after a few seconds. "Dall, I j-just want to get there, s-so I can see Jack," he told me. I kissed him on the tip of the nose. "I know, B. Go get ready." He smiled and tried to move out from under me but had no success. "D, I n-need you to move," he sighed. "What? You want me to move down," I teased, lowering myself so I was on top of him.
"Dallon, ugh you're b-being so an-noying," he groaned. I went limp and laid so our chests were flush together. "Oh no, Bren. I can't get up. I'm too tired," I said playfully. "Oh my god, you're s-so stupid," he laughed as he poked my sides and pushed me off of the bed. I curled into a ball on the floor and pulled at the duvet covering Brendon. Unfortunately, the duvet wasn't the only thing that fell on top of me. "Dallon, what the h-heck were you thinking," Brendon asked, seeming concerned that he'd just fallen on top of me. "I wanted to be comfy again. I didn't know you'd fall with the blanket," I explained. "Oh my god," Brendon laughed, "I guess we could st-stay for a few more minutes." I cheered quietly and hugged Brendon closer.
We laid together on the floor for about 10 minutes before Brendon decided that we really had to get ready. Spencer and Nick were already almost done setting up, so I decided it was fine for us to leave soon. Brendon put on a yellow tshirt with an embroidered sunflower on it and a pair of black skinny jeans. He made sure to put on the necklace I'd gotten for him a while ago. He wore it everyday. "Hey, D-Dall," he asked. I hummed in response and threw on a pair of jeans but hadn't found a shirt yet. "What are your thoughts on lip gloss? I have a tube of it but I've always been too nervous to wear it." I walked up to him and tipped his chin up so he was looking in my eyes. "I think it would suit you," I told him. His face turned red, but he smiled through it as I pulled him to my chest and hugged him tightly. "I love y-you, Dall," he spoke softly. "I love you too, B. Let's head out," I said, kissing him on the forehead. "Dall, put on a shirt first," he reminded me, not that it really matter because as soon as we got to school, I had to change into my tuxe.
Brendon and I walked into school, and Jack was waiting at the doors to pick up Brendon. I left the two of them by Bren's locker and booked it to the bathroom to change into my tuxe. As soon as I was done, I made my way to the courtyard. The moment I saw the set up, I found myself getting more and more excited. I walked to where Spencer and Nick were standing, admiring their work. "Guys, it looks great. I can't thank you enough. Bren is going to love it," I told them. They both smiled at me and showed me where to stand. Once I was in place, I sent a text to Jack to take Brendon to the library, where the pathway started. This was it.
I was in my spot at the end of the flower pot pathway and felt my heart beating out of my chest as Brendon walked through the double doors into the courtyard. "The Way It Was" by the Killers was playing over the school intercom, and his glossy lips shone in the early morning sunlight. His cheeks tinted red when he saw me and realized that all of this was for him. I gave him a slight wave and grinned at his bashful smile. He walked over to me slowly, stepping carefully as not to knock over any of the flower pots. He looked up at me with those big brown eyes. "Hey," I said. "Hi, D," he whispered. "I have a question for you, flower," I started, and Brendon nodded his head. I looked over to Spencer who was in charge of pulling the cord. He pulled it and yellow balloons came falling over me and Brendon. "Will you go to prom with me?"
Brendon covered his mouth and nodded fervently. I took him into my arms and hugged him tightly. "I love y-you, Dallon," he spoke into my neck. "I love you too, B," I told him, pulling him in for a kiss. He didn't hesitate to kiss me back, but we were cut short by Spencer, Nick, and Jack pegging us with balloons. Brendon gasped as I held him closely and shielded him from the balloons. Our friends laughed and Spencer even took Nick on his shoulders to gain height over me. "Bren, quick! Get on my shoulders," I told him. I lifted him onto me and ran after Spencer and Nick, while Jack was still pegging us with balloons.
I ran over to where Jack was and let Brendon bop Jack on the head. Nick and Spencer ran after us and wound up pushing Brendon and I into a bush. Bren and I laid side by side in the grass, laughing hysterically. "Hey," I whispered. "Hey," he giggled. "I love you," I told him, pecking his lips softly. "Ugh you guys, I get that you're in love or whatever, but stop being all mushy gushy," Spencer whined. "Oh you mean like this," I asked, moving closer to Brendon and kissing him passionately. Brendon smiled into the kiss and parted his lips slightly. "You literally live together. Do that anywhere other than in front of me," Spencer complained. Brendon and I pulled apart laughing. "Prom is gonna be hell for you, man," I told Spencer, to which he rolled his eyes and begrudgingly gave us a muttered congratulations.
