'Ayane....can we talk?' I asked, hoping above all that she is fine.
'Oh yeah sure.' She said smiling and for a moment I thought that I saw the flicker of a genuine; real smile. 'What do you wish to talk about?'
'I....Well. ...I am sorry about yesterday. I didn't mean to hurt you or anything. It's just I am so tired.....of seeing you fighting....with yourself that I couldn't take it anymore. But yeah I acted like a jerk and please Ayane.....I am really apologising. I am really sorry.' I said all this in one go without stopping for catching even my breath. When I was done I bowed in an apology.
She was looking at me with her beautiful eyes all wide and the light from the large window on my left illuminated her iris. Coffee brown.
'What did you say?' She asked, keeping a hand on her chest. Her face a little red now.
'I said that I am sorry for yesterday.' I repeated.
'No' She shook her head '....before that.'
'I said.....ummm....I am just tired of seeing you fighting with yourself that I couldn't. ...take it...anymore.' I finished with a sigh and then her head dropped low; eyes glued to her feet.
'Hey what happened. Ayane I am sorry.....I ....'
'How did you know?' She said cutting in between my words and looking up at me. Her face was now filled with hot tears and her nose was all red.
'Hey c'mon don't cry.' I made her sit on the stair with me and offered her my handkerchief. 'Please don't cry. And how do I know you ask.....Well it's because your smile holds pain. It's not so difficult to see.' I said this with a weak smile.
She wiped her face and looked at me. 'You don't have to be sorry. You said the truth yesterday. It's all true. I don't know whom I was trying to fool. But....I am just so glad that.....someone was able to see. It's like getting noticed after years of playing hide and seek in the dark. So you shouldn't be sorry.'
She looked at me and smiled weakly, but this time I saw it more clearly. That smile was real, which was meant to be there all along.
'Oh I should be going. I came to submit the leave form for today and tomorrow.' She said getting up.
'Why? You sick?' I got up too.
'No. Actually I am going to Kyoto today, for a week.'
'Oh I see' I gave her a thumbs up.
'Bye. See you after vacations.' She waved and ascended the steps towards the faculty room. But after reaching the landing, she turned.
'Takeru....' She said
'Yeah' I replied looking up at her.
'One day....I may tell you everything.'
She said this and was gone leaving me feeling.....I don't know what I felt at that moment. I really don't know.
