"Hey Ludwig, long time no see." You let out a small chuckle, gripping the item in your hand tighter but being careful as to not bend or break it. You took a deep breath and went on with talking.
"I know it's been a while, and I know u haven't come visit you that often...but I missed you..a lot." You glanced to the side, watching as the trees swayed in the wind in the autumn breeze. A small smile graced your lips.
Ludwig lead you to a small clearing in the never ending forest, you looked around in amazement at all the greens and reds, the coloring blending with the clear blue sky. Ludwig tugged your hand softly, a smile cracking his lips as he took in your wondering eyes. You refocused back on him and gave a sheepish smile and continued to follow him more into the clearing. He set down the blanket he had been carrying and laid it out against the green grass. He set down the small picnic basket and sat down on the blanket with you, you bent your legs to the side and leaned on your side and elbow for support. Ludwig carefully pulled out a few sandwiches, some crackers with cheese, a bottle of wine which was uncharacteristic for him. You gave him a raised eyebrow and he simply smiled.
"Is this a special occasion?" You asked him.
"It might be." He replied and laid everything out on the blanket, and you two ate and drink. Some conversation was introduced but other than that, it was silent for the most part, the birds and wind sang instead. That was the best part about this relationship, well one of the best parts, it was that you two didn't need conversation to fill the quiet, you two were perfectly contempt in sitting in comfortable quietness. So as you tie ate in silence, it didn't bother you two one bit. It wasn't until you two finished eating that you noticed something was off about Ludwig. He was a bit more nervous, he kept crashing his fingers through his hair and kept peeking into the basket.
"Is there something else in there that you're waiting for to pop out?" You asked after the fifth time you watched him peek into it. He gave you a small smile and crafted his fingers through his hair..again.
"Oh no..I'm just making sure I didn't miss anything."
"Uhuh...sure." You gave a small chuckle and leaned back on your shoulders, taking in the cool air and warm sun. You closed your eyes briefly, you felt Ludwig shift and move but your eyes stayed closed. It wasn't until he cleared his throat did you crack open your eyes, only for them to fully widen as Ludwig was kneeling on one leg in front of you, a small black box held firmly in his hand. He looked embarrassed..well no it was more of loving blush than anything. You sat up completely as he started to speak.
"[your name] I've loved you for a very long time..longer than we've been together. I know that we're still young and we shouldn't rush things..but..I want to cherish you forever, I want us to grow old together, I want to raise kids with you and show them the same love we share together. I never want to part from you, I want to wake up to your smiling face everyday. So [your full name]...will you marry me?" You looked at him with shock, taking a moment to register his words before you vigorously shook your head and leaped into his arms, wrapping your arms around his neck.
"Yes! Yes! I don't care how many times I have to say it! Yes!" Ludwig held you close and pecked your lips repeatedly.
"I'll make you the happiest woman alive, I promise you that." He pulled away some and wiped away the tears you didn't even know were flowing. He opened the box and slid the diamond ring onto your finger, then he took that same hand and kissed the back of it. You both smiled at each other and embraced once more.

A year later and you two were blessed with a beautiful baby boy, he had his fathers hair and his mothers eyes. You both named him Jacob. You both cherished him dearly, although you made sure not to spoil him. Ludwig was sure he was gonna take after him in many ways, but was surprised when Jacob always followed you, always did what you did. Jacob baked with you, as well with Ludwig, Jacob would do the laundry with you,  every time you took a nap, Jacob was right there with you, even if he wasn't tired. Ludwig wasn't mad, he was happy that his son loved his mother dearly. As Jacob got older, he leaned more towards Ludwig, helping him out with the garden and lawn, helping with the bear up car in the garage. It wasn't until you got pregnant again did things change. You were three months into pregnancy when your life turned around.
You had recent got back from work at the hospital, your back and feet hurting. Ludwig wasn't him from work yet and Jacob was at his friends house. As you set down your keys on the table, your phone went off and you answered it.
"Hello?" You answered.
"Is this [your full name]." You answered cautiously.
"Yes it is."
"Ma'am I need you to come down to the emergency room immediately, your husband has been in an accident." You heart stopped.
"Ma'am?" The voice asked.
"...I'll be right there." You answered shakily, your mouth going dry. You hanged up and picked up your keys, hurriedly going back to your car and driving to the ER.
Once you arrived there and stated who you were, you were approached by a nurse who led you to a hallway and told you what happened.
"Your husband was in a car accident, he was driving home when a drunk driver slammed into the drivers side of the car. He's in critical condition and is still conscious, he asked to speak with you." You nodded, feeling the tears bubbling at the corner of your eyes. You followed the nurse into the room, and your heart broke at all the tubes in your husbands arms and chest, desperately trying to keep him alive. You walked over to him and sat down in the chair, taking his hand in yours.
"Hey Lud." You spoke softly and his eyes opened to meet yours. He gave a small smile.
"Hello liebling." He rasped out. You squeezed his hand gently and rubbed your thumb across the backs of his knuckles. The door slammed open and his brother, Gilbert, ran in, coming to Ludwig's side immediately. He looked at you, wild eyed and you told him what happened. He took a seat and braced his arms on the bed as he spoke to his brother.
"Hey little bro...how ya feeling?" Ludwig gave a amused laugh.
"Like shit Gil." Gilbert cracked a smile and tried to hide the tears that so desperately wanted to spill.
"You're gonna make it through this." He said and Ludwig gave a slow shake of his head.
"No I'm not."
"Lud don't say that." You spoke softly, gripping his hand tighter.
"It's true..I'm not, I can feel it." You felt the tears starting to stream down your face.
"I love you [your nickname], I always have and always will..but promise me that you won't forget me, don't forget what we had."
"I never will Ludwig, you're my whole heart." He gave you small smile.
"When I'm gone, don't waste your time mourning me..live your life, don't let this old ghost leave you weighted."
"Lud..."
"I'm serious, if you find someone else don't leave them just because of me...I want you to be happy, I want out children to be happy." You nodded.
"Of course."
"Also..remember the names we have for them? ." You nodded,"go through with it, don't change it because of me." You wanted to protest but you didn't want his last breath to be an argument. Ludwig turned his head towards Gilbert, a smile tugging at his lips.
"Gil..I want you to take care of her for me, please. Take care of the kids too."
"I will."
"Do whatever you have to, to keep my family safe, to keep them happy." Gilbert nodded.
"Of course." Ludwig nodded his head firmly and rested his back onto the pillow and gave one last smile.
"I love you both dearly.." his heart monitor slowly ebbed away, the beeps becoming fainter and fainter until they stopped completely. You put your hand over your mouth as your husband passed, you love, your life, your heart. You closed your eyes as sobs racked your body. Two arms wrapped around you and comforted you, Gilberts head resting against yours as he mourned with you, his tears running in tandem with yours.
The funeral was large, friends, family, co-workers. You, Gilbert and Jacob sat in the front of everyone. Your hand rested over your stomach as you looked down at the ground, not believing that this day had actually happened. Friends and strangers gave their condolences to you, your son and Gilbert. Your tears were kept at bay for the majority of the funeral, your heart too broken to produce them. After the service, you went home with your brother in law and son, who eventually went out with his friends to help lighten his spirits. You stayed home with Gilbert as you mourned together what you both lost.

You looked down at the gravestone,
                            Ludwig Beilschmidt
                                   1985-2010
                            Loving husband,
                            Father and brother
A tear rolled down your cheek as you placed the bouquet of Daisy's on his grave, clearing some of the weeds that had sprouted. You placed your hand in the stone and closed your eyes.
"I love you so much." You took a shuddering breath as the tears came down your cheeks quickly. A hand was placed on your shoulder and you looked back to see Jacob there, holding his little brothers hand.
"Are you okay, mom?" Jacob asked and you nodded, standing up and wiping away your tears. He hugged you with one arm and you pulled him close.
"I'm okay sweetie, I just miss him."
"I miss him too, mom." You kissed his forehead and picked up your youngest son, Gilbert. Ludwig had insisted on the name, saying how happy his brother would be if you two named your next son after him. He was, he was ecstatic that Ludwig was willing to name his own son after his weird brother. Gilbert bore resemblance to you than anyone else, the only difference was the starking blue eyes your husband had. You pulled away and took one last look at the grave stone and walked away with your two sons, back to the car and back home. Making a promise to come visit soon again. Although your love had passed and he said to move on, you couldn't. No one held the same passion and love that Ludwig did, no one could be so stern yet have a goofy side that your husband did. No one could raise your kids better than your husband did. So you, along with the help of your brother in law, raised your kids. Your son, Gilbert, took a liking to calling his uncle his father and it broke his heart, to hear his nephew call him something he could never rise up to. He tried to tell his nephew that he was his uncle but your son persisted. For Jacob, he's his uncle Gil. Your Gilbert, he's his father. Ludwig would've approved of it, would've found it hilarious too. But you know that up in heaven or wherever Ludwig is, is that he would've been proud to see the family you raised, to see the family Gilbert helped raise.
