The car rolled along the wide path of the dirt road, the tall grass swaying in the wind as rodents weaved through the high foliage. Visiting Alfred's family home always brought back nostalgic memories, the ones that made you wish you were young again and didn't have the responsibility of adults.
Alfred has been your friend ever since you could remember, you two met at the beach when you both were six, building sand castles, collecting shells and riding the waves, squealing with joy whenever the saltwater would tumble you two onto the soft sands of the beach. Ever since then you two were inseparable, always with each other, sleeping over, hanging out, going out to the small diner you lived near, playing in the creek behind Alfred's house. You two had been there for each other for everything, his first heartbreak, your first date, his broken arm and your first major surgery on your lower abdomen to remove your gallbladder. You two conquered everything, nothing was too big or too small for Alfred and [Your Name]. Junior year of high school is when things really started to change. A transfer student from Belarus, Natalia Arlovskaya, a beautiful platinum blonde hair, violet eyes, neutral faced girl. She was Alfred and yours grade, she spoke good English but used it rarely, tending to speak in her native tongue for the most part. Alfred was love struck when he saw her, always looking her way and gushing about her to you and his close friends. It wasn't until months after she transferred that he decided to talk to her, it was uneventful to say the least. She had stared at him with an unreadable expression and simply walked away afterwards. Alfred thought she couldn't understand him, so he started learning some phrases in Belarusian to talk to her and hopefully impress her. This went on for several weeks until Natalia finally told him in English to stop talking in Belarusian for his butchering of the language, she told him that if he wanted to learn the language that she would teach him. That's how it started, the two would have two hours of tutoring on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. They officially started dating five months after her transfer.
A year went by fast and senior year was almost at its end, Alfred and Natalia were still going strong. Alfred had met her brother and sister for the first time and that's a story for another time. As for [Your Name], things were the same. Still single. Ah yes, the dreaded status to have when all your friends were together in good relationships and you were the only one without. You weren't adamant on dating, you were perfectly content being single, you were happy that way. That was until you met Elizabeta Héderváry. You were visiting your cousins, Ludwig and Gilbert Beilschmidt, in Germany. It was common for you to visit them during the summer for the three months that you had off. It had been the third week you were staying there and you had been interrupted in making dinner when Gilbert came crashing into the house with a brown haired girl hot on his heels wielding a frying pan? Odd but you thought nothing of it. It didn't bother you until they both came into the kitchen and Gilbert tried to hide behind you, shaking you around trying to dodge the girls weapon. Unfortunately for all three of you, the girl had accidentally hit you on the head with the frying pan and after that everything went dark for you. When you had woken up it was to a concerned Ludwig and the arguing of Gilbert and the girl. The girl, Elizabeta as you learned, was saying how if Gilbert hadn't harassed her, this wouldn't have happened. Gilbert thought otherwise, saying how she shouldn't have chased him to begin with. Upon realizing you had awoken, Elizabeta had repeatedly apologized to you, blaming Gilbert but also herself for the hit that you took. You didn't say anything, you were too busy admiring her. She had long, wavy brown hair, bright green eyes and the most beautiful smile you had ever seen. You had told her it was okay and it was bound to happen with Gilbert as your cousin. Gilbert opposed to that, obviously. That's how it started, Elizabeta would visit almost every day just to talk with you, a beautiful friendship blossomed to life and not too shortly after a most wonderful relationship occurred as well. Even after you left back home to America, you two kept in touch, texting, video-chatting, phone calls and the occasional letter. It was the start of something extraordinary.
Back on track in the farmland of upstate New York. You arrived at the Jones' house, your second home. Smiling happily you parked your car in the long driveway. Turning to Elizabeta you smiled more.
"I'm really glad you came with me." You spoke. She mimicked your smile.
"Of course dear, I know how important your friendship is with Alfred. I'm glad you invited me along." Leaning over the console she pecked your cheek sweetly, chucking softly as your four year old daughter made a noise of disgust.
"Eww mommy!" Eva, our daughter, squealed in disgust. Laughing softly you ruffled Eva's hair gently and said.
"Mommy is just showing her love for me."
"Well not in front of me!" Eva huffed and crossed her arms. Rolling her eyes, Elizabeta got out of the car and picked up Eva from her booster seat in the back and held her hand. Getting out of the car as well, you took Elizabeta's hand and led the two up to the front porch of the Jones' house. Before you could knock Alfred came bursting from the screen door and scooped you up into a hug, a laugh erupting from both of your mouths.
"[Your Name]! You came!" Alfred cheered in happiness.
"Of course I am Alfie! I wouldn't miss this for the world." You smiled and hugged your best friend close to you, well the best you could when he's squeezing you tight like a serpent. Natalia appeared the doorway and smiled gently to Elizabeta and brought her into a small hug.
"It's good to see you again." Natalia spoke softly. Elizabeta smiled back.
"Same to you, Nat." She replied. Alfred let go of you and brought Elizabeta into a hug as well, although not as strong, and kissed her cheek as well. He let go and crouched down to your daughters height.
"Well hello there baby girl, haven't seen you since you were," Alfred put his hand up to Eva's knee, "this high." Eva hid behind Elizabeta's leg and Alfred smiled widely with a chuckle. " I ain't gonna hurt ya, I'm your uncle Alfie!" He said with a slight pose. Eva smiled a bit but continued to hide. Standing back up all five of you headed inside the house and greeted Natalia's siblings as well as Alfred's parents. Two toddlers ran out from the kitchen and crashed into yours and Elizabeta's legs.
"I'm hoping you two remember Michael and Anna." Alfred said, smiling down at his two kids. You smiled and laughed a bit.
"How could we forget? These two kept us busy for weeks!" You said happily, scooping up Anna into your arms and hugging her close. Elizabeta did the same with Michael, kissing his forehead gently.
After a grandiose dinner and shared stories after, Alfred led you away from everything to catch up. He led out past the house, past the creek and towards the rolling hills of the farmland. Sitting down in the talk grass and alfalfa, Alfred pulled you close and draped his arm around your shoulders, your head resting on his shoulders. Alfred spoke after a few minutes of silence.
"Things surely turned out good for us." You hummed in agreement. "Everything good with Elizabeta?" You nodded.
"Yeah were fine, we're thinking about another kid but we haven't made plans for anything yet. My cousins moved in with us, Elizabeta is trying to get over her hatred for Gilbert and Ludwig is a great babysitter." You replied, leaning back on your forearms to watch the sun slowly set beyond the hills. "What about you and Natalia? Everything good with you two?" Alfred smiled softly.
"Yeah were fine as well. Natalia still stays at home to take care of the kids. Her brother, Ivan, has been with us for a few weeks, he's planning on staying for a few more months. I don't mind him, I used to hate him but I'm over that."
"That's good that you two are good." Minutes of silence filled the air.
"I missed this."
"Missed what?" You asked. Alfred continued to look at the lowering sun.
"This. Us. We used to do this all the time, I barely see you anymore. You're like a sister to me...I missed you, [nickname]."
"I missed you too, Alfie." Looking at him you smiled softly. He returned the same expression. Pulling you close, you two watched as the sun lowered completely, leaving the sky in dark reds and purples. For a moment if felt as if the clock turned back to the time of childhood. When nothing mattered and everything felt as if nothing could go wrong. As if time was on their side and they were invincible. For a moment, they were young again.
