Here's another update for you guys. While the flashback doesn't really contain an actual scene of physical abuse, it does introduce the part of Zayn's character that feel the need to protect people. It may be difficult to understand, but it will be expanded on in later chapters.
Warning: Some of Zayn's thoughts do contain mentions of self-harm and the mental pains of the abuse he endured, so please read carefully.
Chapter 9:
Flashback
"Hurry, mummy! The pirates are catching up to us!" I called as I ran across the backyard and hid behind the tree that we claimed as our hideout. My mum quickly ran beside me and knelt down in front of me.
"Alright, fellow bandit, what do we do now?" She asked in her best gruff voice. We were running from the pirates because they caught us on their ship at port, stealing the gold that they stole themselves. But we had to take it. We were thieves after all.
"We have to find a place to stash the gold where they can't find it. Somewhere that isn't obvious," I replied, looking around the backyard for a good hiding spot. I looked at the shed we had in the back, and I pointed it out to her. "We'll hide it there. Then they can't frame us for something we didn't do," I said, urging my mum to follow me on our hands and knees as we crawled over to the shed.
"Okay, you keep watch while I stash the gold," I said, and she nodded seriously before crouching low and watching all around for the pirates. I smiled at mummy's silliness, and then I rushed into the shed.
I closed the door behind me, and I turned to look around the shed. I saw the multiple boxes that were beneath a table, and I knew I could hide the gold there. I just had to push the boxes out of the way.
"Okay, I think I found a spot. I'll hide the gold and be out in a minute," I informed my partner in crime, and then I rushed over to the boxes and pushed them out of the way with all of my might. Suddenly, I heard my mum call to alert me.
"A pirate's coming, bandit! I repeat, a pirate is coming!" She called, and then I heard my dad's voice. He must have just gotten home from work.
"So I'm a pirate now?" He asked, and then I heard my mum laugh before calling to me again.
"The pirate's got me! Save yourself!" She called out, and I looked over to where the boxes were. I could easily hide behind them. I could hide away from everything-- from daddy. I didn't have to face him again. But I couldn't leave mummy. I had to save her if I could.
I put on my best brave face, and I opened the shed door, running straight at my dad. "Rawr!" I tried to roar, and I hit him as hard as I could in the leg. "Get away from her!" I yelled, continuing to hit my dad as hard as I could, even if it hurt my hands.
"Zayn, sweetheart, calm down. Zayn!" My mum said, pulling me away from my dad after I hot him a few times. I looked up at my dad and saw him looking at me in confusion, my mum appearing with the same facial expression. And I waited for the yelling. Because I did something bad. I had to get in trouble now. And daddy would punish me.
Instead, my mum hugged me tight and spoke in a soft voice. "It's okay, love. The pirates are gone. Mummy's okay," She said, but I knew she must still be terribly confused. Still, she pulled back and smiled at me. "Are you okay, love?" She questioned, her palm holding my cheek gently.
I wanted to scream it all out then. I wanted to tell her that I didn't like daddy anymore. I didn't like the touches he gave or the games he played with me. He didn't play like mummy did. And I didn't like it one bit. But my mummy looked so happy with both of us, so worried, so I nodded.
