Finally an update!
These past few weeks have been quite a roller coaster for me. It still isn't as good as it could be, but I will talk to you guys about it soon in depth.
For now, I apologize if I worried anyone or disappointed anyone with the lack of updates.
I hope you all have a lovely day and enjoy this update because this is the major turn in the story. ❤
Chapter 38:
"I heard we have a substitute today in English," Louis said as we walked into the school building. "That probably means writing a random essay that the teacher won't even grade when she returns."
I forced a smile onto my lips at his pure annoyance, and I shook my head. Although Louis and I both made decent grades, we weren't keen on "busy work." Maybe some of the other kids were, but it was really just a pain.
I wanted to join in on Louis' carefree conversation; I wanted to go back to when I bottled up my past and lived a pure lie, even to my closest friend, but the only thing on my mind was Liam and the events that occurred the night before.
I didn't say the words, but I traced them, and I knew that Liam received the message loud and clear. Instead of discussing it all, Liam turned away. He seemed to ignore everything that happened, being incredibly determined to continue learning anything I could teach him about piano.
I took what I could get. I was thankful enough just to have Liam sitting by my side. We didn't have to discuss anything, and he didn't even have to return my feelings, I just needed him to stay. He did.
Even if he was tense and cautious around me after my semi-confession, it didn't matter. All that mattered was that he didn't mind sticking around me. He didn't run away.
"You okay?" I heard Louis suddenly ask, and my attention snapped back to him to respond, but I noticed that he wasn't even looking at me. My eyes followed along his trail of vision until I saw Liam standing there with a hopeless look on his face. His eyes were heavy with gloom and he seemes to be trying to make himself appear smaller, his shoulders low and his whole body more closed in on itself. His father must have hurt him again, and I didn't know if I could keep quiet much longer. Not after discovering exactly how I felt about him.
"Yeah. I'm fine," Liam smiled, but I didn't believe it for a second. His smile didn't reach his eyes, but if Louis noticed, he didn't say anything else on the matter.
"Harry told me you helped him out with his song for the showcase. Just wanted to say thank you for doing that. I'm rubbish at giving advice on music," that was true, "so I thought you'd be a good person to do that. From what you've told me, you really like writing, so I just assumed."
Hearing Louis so sincerely thank Liam for helping out his boyfriend made me realize how held back Louis used to be. Sure, we were best friends, we hung out a lot, but we both held such huge secrets from one another. The only difference is, Louis told me his. I'm planning on never telling Louis mine.
"It's cool, Louis. It was no problem. He was wonderful, and I think you'd really enjoy his song." This time around, Liam gave a real smile, and it was wonderful to witness. His real smiles seemed so rare that I cherished every single one of them. He would probably never know that my favorite smiles were his shy ones. The ones he tried to hide but couldn't. I loved those because they were formed from true happiness; Happiness that he couldn't contain inside.
"I would give him a Grammy for just singing the ABC's," Louis laughed, but anyone would be an idiot not to realize the truth to his words. It was obvious that he loved Harry, and I grew envious. Their relationship seemed so stable, so strong, so true. Meanwhile, I had no idea where Liam and I stood. We weren't even dating, and that thought alone made me anxious. Still, there was one thing I knew. Even if I have never heard Harry sing, Liam's voice will always be my favorite thing to listen to.
