Chapter 19:

Flashback

"How was school today, my little bird?" My mum questioned as I climbed into the back seat of the car. I set my backpack down before buckling my belt and answering her.

"It was good. We painted today with our fingers. I made you a picture, but it's a surprise for your birthday," I said, smiling widely at her as she looked into the rearview mirror. She smiled back as well, a teasing look in her eyes.

"So, you're going to make your loving mum wait a whole two weeks?" She questioned, and I nodded happily.

"You have to, mummy. It's a birthday present," I assured.

"What about your aunt Colette? Does she get to see it before then?" She questioned, and I thought about it before nodding.

"Yes. She's an artist. She can help me make a few more changes to make it perfect. It'll be better than anything ever!" I replied confidently, and my mum laughed before parking the car.

"Even better than ice cream with your mum?" She asked, and I looked out of my window to see that we were parked outside of the ice cream shop. My favorite.

"Definitely not," I said before unbuckling myself and rushing out of the car. I waited eagerly for my mum at the entrance, and I held the door open for her as she entered.

"Why thank you, kind sir," She joked, and I bowed before giggling and running in beside her.

"May I have strawberry, mum?" I asked, and she nodded.

When we finally walked up to the counter, my mum smiled happily at the worker and ordered. "We'll have one strawberry bowl and one vanilla bowl, please," She said. The cashier took our order, and I jumped excitedly as we got our ice cream and sat at a table together.

"Taste test?" She questioned, and I laughed whine nodding. We each got a spoonful of ice cream and traded them with each other, tasting the other flavor. I thought the vanilla was rather sweet, but it was delicious all the same. There could be nothing sweeter.

"Let's try different flavors next time, mummy," I said, and she agreed.

"We're going to be bold, eh?" She questioned, and I nodded. I liked that word. Bold. I wanted to be bold.

"Yes. I think I'll always be bold. Is that possible, mum?" I asked, and she smiled softly as he ran her hand through my hair and pressed a kiss to my forehead.

"Of course it is, Zayn. Of course it is."

-----

"Would you like more tea, dear?" My aunt asked Liam. It was quite a surreal and unusual sight. The both of us sitting on my bed and just being. And my aunt was aware of him as well.

Liam shook his head and replied, "No thank you." He was being as polite as always, and I felt guilty for the way I treated him; the way I tricked everyone around him.
