Chapter 35:

I walked through the door to see my aunt painting furiously in the living room. She had paint on her cheek and on the sleeve of her shirt, but she didn't seem to notice or care. Still, as soon as she heard the door open and shut, she was calling out to me.

"How was school?" She questioned, and I walked over to her, giving her a kiss on the cheek.

"It was alright. Um, is it okay if a few friends come over tomorrow?" I questioned, and my aunt immediately stopped painting to offer me her full attention. She placed her brush into a jar of water and grabbed a towel to wipe her hands before turning to me with a raised eyebrow.

"Friends? Would that happen to be Liam and Louis?" She questioned, and I shrugged a bit.

"Yes and no. It's not just them. Louis' bringing two others along. Um, Harry and Niall." I felt my hand tighten into a fist at his name, but I kept my expression trained as I continued. "Harry is Louis' boyfriend and Niall is Harry's friend," I explained, and my aunt smiled.

"Yes, they're all welcome to come. I probably won't be doing much tomorrow anyways. Do you guys have anything planned?" She questioned, turning back to her painting to continue her work as I leaned against the couch, glancing at her painting.

It was a garden scene. There were several different kind of plants that weren't distinct. They seemed to all blend together in a beautiful sweeping motion. The only thing in complete focus was a rather bright star in the sky. It was the biggest in the painting. It was nighttime, and there were several stars in the sky of her painting, but I couldn't see a single constellation.

"Not really. I figured we'd stay in and just hang. I mean, I don't really know them, so I'm no sure what they like. Louis and I usually just play video games for hours on end," I thought aloud, and my aunt chuckled a bit. She knew about our gaming habits all too well. She had to call our names repeatedly to announce to us that dinner was ready.

"What about Liam? What does he like to do?"

I found myself drawing a blank.

My aunt waited patiently, dipping a new paintbrush into a dark blue colour before beginning to create shadows in her painting.

"He likes to write songs... and listen to me play piano. He's really into music. Um, I don't know. All we ever really do is talk. Is that weird? Should I know more about his interests? Does that make me a bad... friend? Um, person?" I wondered, lowering my bag to the floor as I looked over at my aunt.

I saw the upward curve of his lip as she turned her body away from me, turning until her back was to me as she focused on painting. It was silent for a moment, the only sound being that of her paintbrush stroking onto the canvas. It was a nice, pleasant sound, and it reminded me of the metronome that helped me keep pace when I first started playing piano. Background noise to settle the silence.

"You don't have to know a person's every interest to know them. The things you two talk about are probably far more important and personal than the trivial facts," My aunt mused, turning back to me to offer me a smile.

"Still, I feel like I should try harder. Like maybe I should try to get to know the small things. Isn't that important, too?" I wondered, gesturing with my hands before crossing them over my chest. I've never really been in a relationship, and while Liam and I weren't dating, it wasn't a secret that we liked each other.
