Chapter 16
Cameron's POV
"Cameron, when was the last time you went out?" My coworker Nick asked. I chuckled at that.
The last time I went out, I was almost murdered and now my attacker is back to get me.
"Oh, I don't know. It's been a while." I was stocking books onto a shelf while Nick stood behind me flipping through a new release.
"We should go out tonight. I'm alone tonight and I have nothing better to do." I finished stocking the shelf and stood up to look at him.
"I don't know, Nick. I'm really not up for going out and partying."
"We don't have to go partying. I just don't want to sit at home doing nothing while I wait for my boyfriend to get back home."
"What do you have in mind then?" I cocked and eyebrow at him and we began to walk to the front of the store.
"I don't really know." He frowned and furrowed his eyebrows, probably trying to think of something we could do. "We can go to that little restaurant on the corner by my apartment and eat really unhealthy, cheesy food."
"Alright, you had me at unhealthy." I smiled at him and he laughed.
"See you later then, Cameron!" He waved at me and began to walk to somewhere else in the store.
~~~~~
"And where do you think you are going, missy?" Jay looked me up and down and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Going to go eat really greasy food with Nick from work."
"Nick from work? And who is this Nick from work?"
"Nick. I've talked about him before. He's gay."
"Oh!" He laughed. "Alright, good. I'd have to kick ass otherwise." He came up to me and kissed me on the forehead. "Have fun! Bring me back something greasy."
I laughed and nodded. "Will do, fatty." I quickly walked out of the apartment as he gasped at what I had said to him. When I closed the front door behind me, I laughed a bit, and then headed towards the restaurant. When I made it to the restaurant, I saw Nick already inside sitting at a table in the corner. I walked up to him and sat down next to him.
"Hey!" He smiled at me.
"So, what's good here?" I asked as I looked at the menu behind the counter.
"I love the mozzarella sticks. The popcorn chicken is really good too."
We stood up and walked towards the counter to order our food. Once we ordered, we sat back down and waited.
"It's such a nice night out." I sighed as I looked out the window. The lights shined on the nearby buildings, people were laughing as they walked by.
"It really is. And it's so nice to get out with someone other than Tanner for once." I noticed his small smile when he mentioned his boyfriend.
"Tell me about Tanner?" I asked.
His eyes lit up and he scooted closer to the table and put his arms on top of it. "Jeez, where do I begin? He's the most amazing man I've ever met. He's from Michigan. He works at a bakery. He wants to be a professional baker one day. He's really good, I've gained like, 15 pounds since we've been together."
"Shit, have him bake me something." I nudged his arm and smiled. An employee came over and brought our food to us. Nick and I thanked the man and started to eat our food as we talked about anything and almost everything.
We were getting ready to leave when a familiar face walked into the building, with another familiar face.
"You've got to be kidding me." I scoffed. It was Mary and Daniel.
"Cameron!" Mary chirped at me and ran over. "Oh my god, I can't believe it's you! I haven't seen you-" I cut her off.
"You haven't seen me since you betrayed our friendship and gave me to a guy who tried to kill me, twice." I spat at her.
"Cameron, please. Not here." She whispered and looked around at the people in the building.
"No, FUCK you, Mary. And fuck you, Daniel."
"Cameron, maybe we should go?" Nick asked. I ignored him.
"Cameron, can't we just talk about this and forgive and forget?" She pleaded. "I forgave Daniel."
"Daniel cheated on you. You helped some guy try to kill me. BIG FUCKING DIFFERENCE." I was getting really angry now.
"Hey, how about you don't make a scene?" Daniel put his hand on my shoulder. I slowly looked at his hand, then looked up at him, and then turned to look at Mary. Without a second thought, I punched Mary in the eye, and kneed Daniel in the dick.
"Let's go, Nick." I grabbed his hand and we walked out of the restaurant. When we were almost to his apartment, he stopped me and made me look at him. I had tears forming in my eyes.
"What the hell happened back there? What did you mean when you said she helped a guy try to kill you?" He asked me.
"She's a backstabbing bitch who fed me to the wolves."
"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked softly. Tears had started to fall and I quickly wiped them away.
I shook my head. "No, not right now."
"Alright. When you're ready, I'll be here to listen." He pulled me in for a hug and started to stroke my hair. After a few minutes of hugging, I let go and we parted ways.
When I got home, Jay was lying down in bed on his phone. He looked up and probably noticed that I looked like a mess because he sat up instantly.
"What the hell happened?"
"Mary and Daniel." Was all I said. I huffed and threw my body down on the bed face first.
"I hate them both." He mumbled, mostly to himself. I just mumbled an "mhm" into the bed where my face was. He pulled me up to him and held me close. "Let's go to sleep, we can talk about this tomorrow." I nodded and kissed his cheek, then we both fell asleep.
