Gail telephonedher husband as soon as they got back to the hotel. Janey convincedKatey to go to the pool with her, to give her mom some privacy.
"Richard, youwon't believe how frightened and injured this child is, mentally. How could anyone be cruel to a gift like these psychic children?"Gail was almost in tears.
"We can putJaney's bunk bed back together. The girls should probably sleep inthe same room for a while." Richard answered. "And you, yourself, remember how cruel some people can be. All the hardship you had inschool, even in college, because your abilities scare people whodon't have them."
"But toliterally beat a child because she sees a dead relative? I don'tunderstand that kind of hate."
"I know youdon't, Gail. It will be alright. We can help Katey. The best day ofher life, so far, was running into Janey. We'll make it right."Richard soothed his wife.
It took a while, but Janey convinced Katey to join her in the water. Katey seemedafraid of everything. While they were splashing around in the shallowend of the pool, Janey spoke to Zelistuck, in her mind.
"Zel, is thereany dragon skill or talent I can learn or relearn to help Katey?"
"Dragon song isknown to have remarkable healing ability on wounded humans.Especially ones wounded in the mind."
"What's thedifference between me just humming or singing and Dragon Song?"
"That, Janey, will be a training session for tonight. Your father is thinking ofputting your bunk bed back together so you two can sleep alone but inthe same room. Tell him no, that you think Katey will heal faster inyour double bed with you."
"OK. Dadusually trusts my judgment."
Gail came down tothe pool and got the girls then they dressed and went to arestaurant. It took a lot of coaxing to get Katey to order what shewanted, telling her that Mr. Frost was still footing the bill, helped. Katey mostly listened, happily, as Gail and Janey told herabout their house, town and school.
"But I'm onlyin sixth grade. I won't be going to school with you, Janey."Katey answered very sadly.
"You won't begoing to school like most kids, Katey. We're going to home schoolyou until you feel comfortable around crowds of other kids. You'llget plenty of social interaction with Janey after school andweekends, but I think you are too delicate and raw right now to dealwith school. I hope you don't mind." Gail reassured her.
Katey brightenedat that. "I think that will be wonderful. You are right, crowdsscare me."
They slept thatnight in the hotel suite, Katey sleeping next to Janey who wasn't"asleep" a good part of the night; she went traveling withZelistuck again and learned from an expert how to use Dragon Song tosoothe Katey's tortured soul. When she got back she hummed inKatey's ear most of the night.
Packed up andready to leave, all the bags in the trunk of the limo, they still hadfour hours before their flight.
"Katey, what doyou say to a shopping spree? Mr. Frost gave me money to buy you somenew clothes." Gail informed her.
Sadly, with hereyes downcast, Katey replied. "What I have will be sufficient, Mrs.Richardson."
"Hells no!"Janey said with attitude. "You are not Little Orphan Annie and nosister of mine is going to look like one!" Janey hooked Katey'sarm and marched her up to Jack the driver.
"Jack, we havetime before our flight, find us the hottest teen boutique in town sowe can dress this child to befit mysister." She blustered at the driver, who grinned like a bird fedcat.
Katey blushed toher shoulders but said nothing and Janey saw the hint of a smile.
During the ride,Janey leaned on Katey a little and continued humming her Dragon Songto the girl. At the boutique, Katey was finally laughing and posingand having fun with Janey. At one point Janey caught sight of hermom, who was almost in tears but gave Janey a "thumbs up" forhelping Katey open up.
Dressed to kill,Katey left the boutique in one of her new outfits, laughing andgiggling like a twelve year old is supposed to. They stopped at aroadside hot dog stand and bought hot dogs with everything and colddrinks then Jack leisurely drove them to the airport. Gail had a hugecanvas bag that she put on Katey so she wouldn't mess her clothesbut still have fun trying to eat the overloaded hotdog. It warmedGail's heart to hear the child laughing with Janey so freely.
Their hot dogsconsumed, and cleaned up again, the girls fairly bounded out of thelimo into the airport crowd but then Katey grew pensive and clung toJaney for dear life.
"It's ok,Katey, no one is going to bite you." Janey whispered.
"The emotionshere ... too much ... too many to sort out." Katey whispered.
"I can help youwith that." Janey said then called Zelistuck.
"Is thereanything I can do to shield her from the empathic overload?"
"Use your PK tobuild a shield of silence around you both."
"Just thinksphere of silence and push?"
"Yes."
"Katey, keephold of me, don't strangle me, but don't let go, OK?"
Katey just noddedon the verge of tears.
Janey concentratedand soon felt Katey relax.
"How did you dothat? Now the only one I feel is you."
"PK. I built ashield of silence around the two of us. Now if someone bumps into us,gets inside the shield, you'll feel it, but it should keep thenoise of everyone else at bay."
"Thank you,Janey. No one seemed to understand that my shyness and inability toconcentrate was because I can feel for almost a mile around me."
"I'll have tosee if I can teach you to shield yourself."
Katey reduced herstrangle hold on Janey's arm to just holding her hand and the restof their journey was uneventful, but Janey was exhausted by the timethey got home.
