Hello everyone! Gem here with a warning. I know there are those people who don't like reading about real people being dead. If that person is you this one-shot isn't for you. It is an AU so don't worry. There isn't anything graphic or violent so feel free to read on! I have been told by the lovely readers it is more cute than anything else but I know people don't like reading this sort of thing. You have been warned! See y'all at the end of the chapter.

I should have seen the signs. I bought a house recently. It is small and quaint like a cottage out of a fairy tale. It was one bedroom, one bath, a decent sized kitchen, a living room, and a good sized garden. I lived alone... well that is what I thought.

It took me a few days to unpack everything. I could have unpacked everything in a day but I had work to do. To my surprise unpacking took less time than I thought. Everything seemed to find a home almost like the boxes unpacked themselves.

The next sign happened a few weeks after I officially moved in. It was the most stressful time of year at my job. Everyone was stressed out and everyone stayed late nights just to help with the workload. This included me. I came home every night exhausted. Every night I would  come home to find that the dishes would be put away, the house was clean, and a fresh set of flowers were on my kitchen table. I didn't think twice about it back then. I was too tired to think.

To help with my stress I decided to get a furry housemate. I decided to get a cat. His name is Skip. Skip adjusted to the house quite well but even he noticed something strange about the house. At times he would chase something or paw at something that I couldn't see. It must be a cat thing.

Strange coincidences continued as I lived in the house. Small things changed as if I wasn't quite living alone. I discovered the secret of the house one dark and stormy night. It sounds cliché which in all reality it was. We had a power outage. Skip and I were laying on my bed when the lights went out.  I got out of bed to search for something to give me light. My phone was unhelpful considering it was long dead. I stumbled my way through the darkness hoping to find something to help me see. Instead I hit ran into every wall, hit every corner, and seemed to trip on everything.

"Please be careful!" A voice called out to me from the darkness.

"What? Who is there?" I said in panic backing up into the wall I just ran into.

"There is no need to be afraid! My name is Matthew. I am only here to help." The voice called Matthew replied.

"Help?" Was all I managed to mutter.

"Well yes. May I ask your name?" The voice said softly.

"Stephanie." I replied with a shallow breath.

"Stephanie. What a beautiful name. I know you must be afraid but I reassure you that there is nothing to be afraid of." Matthew responded.

"Says the voice coming from the darkness. You could be a robber or something worse." I said pushing myself off the floor. I had this odd feeling I know Matthew. I just couldn't place it.

"I can see why you are afraid. Stephanie, I wouldn't hurt you. I have been watching over you ever since you moved into this house." Matthew replied.

My voice got caught in my throat. He what?

Matthew seemed to notice my reaction as he quickly spoke up again.

"It isn't like that. Let me show you!"

Before me was a faint glow that soon turned into a transparent man standing before me. He was taller than I with kind brown eyes, short brown hair, and his lips drawn into a kind smile. He had this light around him that glowed like fireplace that sent warmth through the air and allowed you to see.

"You are a ghost." I blurted.

"Yes. I haunt this house. When you moved in I couldn't help myself. I helped you out. I hope you don't mind." He replied scratching his neck nervously.

Thunder struck outside as the rain poured. Skip must have wondered where I was because he came bounding down the hall and saw me with Matthew. He walked over and meowed at the ghost.

"So you have been here the whole time?" I asked picking up Skip and rubbing his head.

"Yes! Don't worry I stayed out of your bedroom and bathroom! I just didn't want to scare you." Matthew's head hung low. He looked so guilty.

"I believe you! It's nice to know that there is someone else in the house besides me and Skip. I wanted a housemate anyway. The house was getting pretty lonely." I replied wanting to help out this person. I could tell he was genuine. He is a good guy. I just know it.

Matthew beamed at me.

"Well it looks like you have yourself a new ghost housemate!" Matthew said giving what I would later find out to be a clap and a half.
