Lightning cracked across the sky as the storm continued to rage above the battle, though the following thunder seemed light in comparison to the wind, which carried the sound of horns and cries of pain that filled the air. The scent of blood was heavy in the air as the two forces fought, with one side hoping to end a long and bloody conflict and with the other desperately attempting to repel the enemy forces. The mortal forces of duty bound soldiers and glory driven mercenaries known as adventurers carried out their invasion without a fault as their commanders directed them from the ridge lines above Castle Blood. And in turn, the army of monsters fought tooth and nail for every inch of ground that they could manage, though it was a losing battle. And in the center of it all, the two leaders of both factions were currently glaring at each other while they prepared for the final confrontation.
"To think that you would still turn on us, despite everything that I have given you..." King Norric said while he stared evenly at the man standing alone before him. Around them, hundreds of both soldiers and adventurers from the mortal races had surrounded the man as well, though they were standing over the corpses of their comrades who had fallen in their first assault.
"And just what have you given me?!" Dark Lord Gyren asked before turning his head to the side so that he could spit out some of the blood that had been gathering in his mouth. "You've given me nothing... but taken everything that I've ever cared about! I fought for you, I defended you, and this is the thanks that you give me?! An army at my door and my family's blood spilled all across the realm?!"
"Their deaths were caused by your rash actions, Gyren." Norric said sternly before lowering his hand so that he could draw his sword. "For the thousands of lives that have been ended by both you and your subordinates, I will be taking your head this day!"
"You can try, Norric!" Gyren screamed before chanting something so quickly that no one around them could understand the words, and instantly an army of hundreds of humanoid creatures in black armor stood before him as they appeared out thin air. "But you will only succeed in joining all of the other fools who have fallen this day!"
"All troops, get into your positions!" A woman yelled from in the back of the room, and soon the forces were fighting again with the two leaders fighting at the center. And as they fought, they were both unaware of the gathering of people in dark robes at the side of the war. These people, who had once been the dark lord's closest subordinates, were now gathering to watch as the monsters were overwhelmed and finally only Gyren remained on the battlefield.
"It appears that it is almost time once again." One of the elders of the group sighed, though his words sparked a feeling of eagerness from those behind him.
"It seems that Gyren's time is over." A woman chuckled madly as the mortal races in the distance cheered and what was left of the army of monsters vanished.
"And that means that we must all start preparing once more." Another sighed as well. "Honestly, I feel that this is more trouble than it's worth."
"I have to agree." Another spoke. "Perhaps if we simply refused to do this anymore-"
"Such talk is treason, Drea." The man who had first spoken glared at the offender. "Silence your opinions, else we make you answer for them."
"Yeah yeah..." Drea sighed. "But since the war is over now, I'm going back. I'd ask for you all to be careful on travels, but then again, I really don't care about any of you."
"The feeling is mutual, between all of us." The elder that had first spoken called out. "But she is right. Now is the time to return to your stations and prepare for the future. And in case any of you have forgotten, the next time we meet, we will be enemies."
"Oh, I haven't forgotten." Drea said with a slight smile as she walked away from the now departing group. "And it's not just us either. Just who knows what new competition the future will bring us? Though, I for one can't wait to see how the new generation will fair."
