Alright so you know the scene where Beverly is walking away, and she calls out to Ben "Hang tough, new kid on the block!"

(Yeah, that one ^^ credits to someone on tumblr)

She had just signed his year book, taking note that it had no signatures and making sure not to bring any attention to it. She just signed it and drew a little heart. Cute, I know. But let's talk about what she shouts at him. Why does no one talk about the double meaning behind it?

One, the surface level. She was making a New Kids reference bc she knows Ben likes them. She's trying to let him know she gets it. She is, in a way, letting him know they can be friends, even though she's walking away as she says it. She, herslef, has friend issues, so she's just kind of reaching out.

Two, a little deeper. She realizes that this poor kid has no friends and is actually very unhappy in his situation. She is literally telling him to "hang tough" bc she knows that he's not happy. She is actually expressing something to him besides a reference. Once again, she's trying to let him know she gets it. She is trying to tell him to keep face bc he deserves to be happy.

Basically, Beverly is a super good friend, even if she's not great at seeing when someone good has feelings for her...... anyway...

Idk why this popped into my head at nearly 2 in the morning, but yeah. I'm sure I'm not the first one to think of this, but no one rlly talks about it?? So I figured I'd put my thoughts out there. I love double meaning, and normally, I don't pick up on it on my own. M'kay.
