Max's POV
I groaned hearing my mother walk into my room. "Time to get up!" She said sternly and opened the curtains blinding me with the sunlight.
"No!" I whined covering my head with my pillow. Couldn't she let me sleep in a little longer? Even though it wasn't my birthday yet she could at least cut me some slack.
"Yes! You will be taking over as Alpha soon. You need to be up before the pack which should've been a few hours ago." She said sternly and sat at the edge of my bed rubbing my back.
I groaned loudly. My father has been training me nonstop now that it was getting closer to my eighteenth birthday. It was nonstop battle training, history lessons, and sex ed. I could do without the last part I already know all of that stuff. I have to listen to my parents all the time.
"You're father has been working you hard I know honey but as soon to be Alpha you need to get more responsibility. No matter how tired you are you need to wake before the pack. Your father was doing it when you and your sister were babies even if you kept him up all night he was still awake and being there for the pack." She said softly.
I groaned. "Fine. Can you please go so I can shower?" I whined and turned to face her. She was still young. Her and father both were. Neither of them had grey in their hair or anything to show they were older. I don't see why I had to take over so soon but I guess it's whatever.
She brushed my cheek and smiled. "Ok but hurry we are having breakfast in ten minutes." She said and got up leaving the room.
I groaned and got up pulling on jeans.
"Bout time you got up. Dad is furious with you." Shelby, my younger sister, said leaning on the doorframe to my room.
I rolled my eyes. "Oh yeah whatever." I growled and pulled in a white v-neck.
Shelby rolled her eyes. "Oh I'm Max and I never get in trouble." She said trying to mimic me.
I growled at her. She's lucky I love her like I do or she'd be on the floor begging for mercy.
"Max! Shelby!" My father yelled from downstairs.
I whined and pushed my sister out of my room closing the door and headed downstairs
Shelby walked up to my father and kissed his cheek out of respect and took her plate from him heading to the dining table to join my mother.
My father turned towards me looking at me angrily.
"You don't have to say anything mom already did." I said looking down.
He growled and looked down then at me. "She always beats me to it. But she is right you cannot sleep in anymore I can't stress enough with your training for becoming alpha." He growled.
I whined. "Why can't I wait a little longer? You and mom are still young you can still serve as alpha!" I whined.
He growled and slammed his hand down on the counter making me jump.
"Max! It is tradition at eighteen that the next in line for Alpha takes over! Never has an Alpha denied his son or daughter from taking that position!" He snapped.
"Cody that is enough! Let the boy eat!" My mother yelled from the dining table.
He growled and looked at her then me. "You are becoming Alpha whether you like it or not. My parents were young when they stepped down but I always went to my father for help. It's not like we are cutting all strings." He said and handed me my plate.
I huffed and went to the table and started to eat staying quiet.
This was becoming a little much on my plate. Maybe I should call Taylor. He just recently became Alpha. I glanced around the table and sighed.
Finishing my food quickly I took my plate to the sink cleaning it and putting it in the drying rack.
"Can I go for a run?" I asked my parents looking at them.
My mother looked at me and smiled. "Of course but take your sister with you." She said
I groaned. She always made me take my sister. Always.
Shelby got up and put her plate away and ran over and kissed my father's and mother's cheek before pulling me out of the house. She shifted into her wolf and looked at me barking.
She was pretty silver colored wolf. Small in stature, but that was common in most females.
I rolled my eyes and shifted into my wolf. I guess you could say my wolf was a cross between my mother and father's. I was brown colored with white splotches everywhere.
I barked at my sister and ran into the woods heading towards the East.
I looked to the side seeing her keeping up at good pace. Good she needs to build up her strength with her wolf.
I slowed to a stop catching my breath. Shelby stopped and whined at me barking again and tackling me to the ground into a friendly game of fighting.
I nipped at her ears pawing at her side playfully. She pulled away and barked again and took off into the bushes.
I smiled and waited for her to burst out from the bushes at me.
Minutes passed by and she didn't come back. I stood and barked for her looking around.
A blood curdling howl burst through the forest making the black birds fly from the trees.
My heart dropped. That was Shelby. That was my baby sister. I ran towards the cry looking for her.
I slid to a stop seeing her. Her back leg was caught in a bear trap; the teeth digging into her leg. Blood making her fur stick together.
I ran over and licked her cheek whining loudly. I couldn't get the trap undone even in my human form.
I threw my head back and howled for my father for Charles anyone who would come and help us.
I shifted back to my human for. "Shelby listen to me do not shift back. Resist the urge to; you will get yourself hurt even more if you do." I said tears streaming down my face.
"Somebody help!" I screamed and looked at her. I could tell her wolf was growing weak from blood loss.
"Shelby! Shelby! Please stay with me! Shelby!" I screamed.
"Max!" I heard my dad yell. I looked up seeing him run towards us.
"Please help! S...Shelby stepped on a bear trap and she's loosing too much blood!" I yelled panicking tears rolling down my cheeks as I see my mother run towards us with Collins and Charles.
This was all my fault. I should've followed her.
