Max's POV

I ran outside to follow Avery. I looked around not seeing her anywhere. "Avery!" I called. You could hear the panic in my voice. I can't have someone else I love get hurt again.

I looked over and saw my sister. Soon a gun shot rang through the air. I gasped seeing Shelby jump. I ran over to her thinking she was shot.

"Shelby!" I called and pulled her into a hug checking her over. "Max stop!" She screamed and pushed me away growling

I looked at her angrily. "I thought you were shot!" I snapped.

"Well it wasn't me!" She yelled back.

I looked over seeing Cody and Charles run out to us. "Are you safe?" My father asked looking at my sister.

She growled at him and looked away. I frowned and looked at my father. "Who got shot then?" I asked worried. Something didn't feel right.

I groaned and rubbed my right shoulder a numbing pain there. My father looked at me. "It's Avery, that got shot. You are feeling her pain she must be by." He said and called for a few of the Warriors.

My heart dropped when he said it was Avery. I was supposed to protect her. It's all her father's fault making her upset. I growled and looked at my father.

"Search the woods and be quick. Avery has been shot. Find her before the hunters do!" He called.

"What if they are there with her?" A warrior called.

"Kill them. We will dispose of their bodies in the river or something." I growled stepping next to my father.

Cody looked at me the the warriors and nodded. "We can't risk them seeing her shift back. If she is shot her wolf is growing weak and will want to shift back. Now let's go!" He yelled and shifted into his wolf

I growled and shifted and ran into the trees.

My heart raced trying to find her. My shoulder felt like it was burning. Soon I heard growling. I could tell it was her.

I looked around and found her scent following it. I growled seeing the hunters surrounding her.

I bolted towards the Hunter pointing the gun at her. I attacked him tackling him to the ground biting at his neck clamping down on it; thrashing my head around.

Soon I was feeling the other hunters grab at me I turned and snapped at one of them.

Avery whined loudly and tried to get up to help me. I growled at her and stood over her protectively growling.

The hunters surrounded us again. I looked at them. I was clearly outnumbered. Where was my pack? They had to of followed me.

Avery whined loudly at me. I looked down at her and licked her cheek. I threw my head back and howled for my pack I needed their help.

I snapped at one of the hunters as he got closer a knife in his hand. Clearly the one I attacked was the only one with the gun.

I needed to make sure they didn't get near the gun too.

Before either of us could move my father attacked one of the hunters followed by Charles and another warrior.

I moved off Avery and sniffled her shoulder whining seeing all the blood.

Collins came running over and shifted back. "Avery! Avery honey you need to shift back I know it will hurt." He said softly.

I whined and shifted and looked at her and nodded.

Avery looked at us scared and shifted back screaming in pain holding her bloody shoulder.

I took her hand worried.

Collins pressed his hand into her shoulder. "Bring me my bag!" He yelled and tried to keep the bleeding down

I teared up. "I'm so sorry honey." I whispered and kissed her hand.

Avery smiled weakly at me. "It's not your fault. It's mine for running off like a little kid." She croaked and squeezed my hand softly.

Collins moved his hands away and checked her shoulder. "Ok the bullet went through and missed anything important. I will patch you up then when we get back I will stitch you up." He said grabbed gauge and bandages.

Avery nodded and looked behind me at her father. "I don't want him near me." She whispered.

I glanced behind me and frowned at my father. He nodded to me. I sighed and looked at Avery. "Ok sweetheart." I said softly.

Collins packed his bag back up. "Ok, Max would you carry her back?" He asked softly.

I nodded and quickly picked her up bridal style. She pressed into my chest.

She felt so weak pressed into me. I was supposed to protect her. She's my mate she should've never been hurt like this. I kissed her forehead and looked up seeing the hospital.

Collins led me to a room. "Lay her down and I will get some blood to help her feel a little better. At least get some color back in her." He said smiling and walked over to a fridge getting some blood then the material to stitch her up.

I whined and laid her down carefully. Holding her hand

Avery smiled at me. "I'm ok honey. I will heal. There probably will be a scar but I'm ok." She said softly. I know she's trying to cheer me up but it's not really working.

I forced a smile. "I know but still." I whined pouting at her and watched Collins get her hooked up to the blood.

Avery looked over at Collins and smiled at him. "Max will you please leave me to her alone? I'm sure your father wants to talk to you about your Alpha ceremony." He said softly

I whined and looked at Avery. She smiled at me. "Go honey it'll be ok." She said and pushed me softly towards the door.

I whined again and went out of the room and looked at my father. I frowned not seeing Charles anywhere only a few warriors.

"How is She?" Cody asked and pulled me into a tight hug.

I hugged him back tightly out of instinct. "She will be ok." I whispered and pulled back wiping a few tears away. "Where is Charles?" I asked.

Cody frowned. "I had to send him home. He was going crazy." He said.

I nodded and sighed. "Collins said to come talk to you about my ceremony?" I asked.

Cody smiled and nodded. "It was supposed to be today but we postponed it to tomorrow due to today's activities. Your mother, sister, and I have moved to our new house near your grandparents." He said softly and smiled at me.

I frowned. "You guys won't stay the night again?" I asked.

Cody frowned. "Max. You have a mate now. You need to stay here with her. You have grown up so much you don't need us to watch over you as much. We are just a phone call away or just a walk down the trail don't worry." He said softly and kissed my forehead.

"I love you son. Always have. And always will." He said softly and hugged me tightly.
