Autumn's P.O.V.
Sally tugs on my hand to try and get me out of the cafeteria but I refuse. I won't give Jade anymore reasons not to trust me. If anything I have to rebuild that trust.
"You're still with Sam even after what she did to you," Sally immediately jumps into argument mode.
"My mom was alive all these years and she never once tried to contact me. I can see why Jade wanted to hide it from me," I defend my girlfriend, even though I make a mental note to ask her what her real reason was. What is she really protecting me from?
"But you kissed me, I thought that"-
"It was a mistake, one I plan on never repeating."
Sally doesn't say anything. She is just looking at me with her gorgeous green eyes. My brain unravels as I think of a way to let her down easy.
I step towards her and take both her hands in mine. I pull away realizing that it might give her the wrong idea.
"Look Sally, in my heart there is only Jade."
"I've always wondered what would've happened if I had the guts to kiss you before you kissed her."
I already know the answer to that one, "nothing would've happened. Hell I didn't even realize I was gay until the first day I laid my eyes on Jade. I mean I sort of knew, but I wasn't sure until Jade stepped into our class."
Sally is looking at me like I wasn't supposed to answer. Like I broke down her last what if? Like I stripped the last bit of hope from her hands and threw it in the trash like it meant nothing. But it's true. Kissing Sally felt wrong and not just because I have a girlfriend but because I didn't feel the way I do when I'm with Jade. There's a spark that jolts through my body, goose bumps that form on my skin, a shiver that runs down my spine. Sally's lips didn't make me shiver. Her touch didn't send me flying. I felt empty and then the guilt kicked in.
"I can't... we can never be together," I say and take a step back. It's written all over Sally's face that her heart is breaking. I reach out to comfort her but decide against it. I don't want to be sending her mixed signals.
I stand there feeling stupid because I don't know how to react. I've said my peace.
Sally is struggling to keep it together and I feel like shit but I can't give her even the tiniest bit of string to cling on to. I steal a quick glance to Jade, who seems to be on the phone.
"Look Sally, you will find an amazing girl, who will make you feel all the things I feel with Jade, you just have to be patient."
Sally nods her head and wipes off the single tear that slid down her cheek.
"Friends?" she asks, and gives me a half smile.
"Friends." I repeat. Sally embraces me in a quick hug and I nod my head towards the table. I don't wait for her to agree to my silent question as I walk back to my Jade. Sally stays where she is for a moment but then jogs a little to catch up to me.
Jade looks up and automatically meets my gaze.
"I can't talk anymore," she says and hangs up the phone.
"Who were you talking to, Sam?" Sally beats me to the punch. I give her a scowl, but that only makes her smirk more. Like we are both expecting it to be my mom, only Sally wants me to get into a fight with Jade.
"My mom," Jade practically growls, her frustration builds within me and flows through my veins. I guess Jade knew the real reason why Sally was asking too.
"You wanna talk about it?" I offer. Jade darts her eyes to Sally then it quickly lands on me again.
"Maybe later," she shrugs.
