A couple of weeks had passed since George and I slept together, and I haven't seen him because both of us are so busy with work these days. We both work at the same hospital, but we only see each other for, like... a few minutes out of each day anymore. My phone went off in the middle of me doing my rounds, but I checked it anyway.

I put my phone away so I could check on my patient with the cancer in his spine.
"Ah, Ms. America is back again." he said.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Hyman. How are you feeling?"
"I feel better every time I see you."
He couldn't stop staring at my breasts... what a perv.
"Okay, anyways... it looks like you're not making much progress with your medical conditions." I told him truthfully.
"Really? Oh my god..." he put his head in his hands and started to cry. That's always the hardest part: watching people cry. Especially the little ones.
"I-I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
I walked out of the room and leaned against a wall. Lukas came up to me and looked at me.
"Hey, you alright?" he asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I nodded.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. This job just gets to me sometimes."
I rubbed my forehead and sighed.
"It's okay, it gets to all of us. That's why they created this beautiful thing called a vacation."
He patted me on the back.
"I can't take a vacation now! Dr. Shepherd needs me now more than ever."
"This isn't about Dr. Shepherd, Lara. It's about you. Sometimes, you have to put yourself first."
"I don't think I can, not in my line of work."
"You're a very kind person, Lara. But even the kindest people have a breaking point. You can't be selfless all the time."
"That's who I am, Lukas." I admitted.
"All I'm saying is... you should take a break. Go somewhere with George for a couple days! Whatever it takes to get your mind off work for a little bit."
"Hm... maybe that's a good idea." I agreed.
I got my phone out and told George to meet me in the lab so we could talk.
I got there quickly, but somehow he got there before I did.
"Hey, Lar. What'd you want to talk about?" he asked.
"Vacation. Working non-stop has seriously been stressing me out, and I gotta get away for a little while."
"I thought you couldn't go on vacation right now?"
"I need to, George. I can only handle so much."
"You'd better talk to Dr. Shepherd first, then, before we start planning."
"What about you?"
"I already asked for some vacation time. I'm probably going to leave next week. I just haven't figured out where to go yet."
"Alright, I'm going to go talk to him then."
I went to go find Dr. Shepherd, and he was in his office.
I knocked on his door even though it was opened, and he waved me in.
"How can I help you, Lara?"
"I need to talk to you about something, Dr. Shepherd."
I sat down in the chair in front of his desk.
"What's that?"
"Vacation time. I know I'm needed here, but I've never been so stressed in my life. I've been working practically non-stop since I got here."
"I understand, Lara. When would you like to start your vacation?" he asked.
"Um, next week Friday?"
"Alright, and for how long?"
"Two weeks."
"That can be arranged. I'll talk to the chief and let you know."
"Thank you so much, Dr. Shepherd."
I walked out of his office and closed the door behind me.
