I walked to work for the day, and I had a gift for Lara. Today's her birthday, and I know she's here for work today too. I'm surprised she didn't ask for the day off though. I saw Lara surrounded by people in the waiting room, where she was checking on a patient's family. I squeezed past all the people so I could give her a birthday kiss.
"Happy birthday, sweetheart."
I wrapped my arms around her waist and kisser her, and she smiled against my lips.
"Thank you, Georgie Bear."
"How does 26 feel?"
"Pretty damned good." she laughed.
"I have a present for you, but you're not getting it til tonight. I've got something special planned for us." I told her.
"Great, I can't wait."
"Happy birthday, Lara."
Dr. Shepherd walked up behind her.
"Oh, thank you, Dr. Shepherd."
He handed her a small gift that was wrapped in blue and green paper.
She opened it carefully, and it was a circle-shaped locket. She opened it, and there was a picture of all her work friends (and me) there.
"Aw, thanks. I love it."
She gave him a hug, and he smiled.
"I'm glad. It was hard trying to get a good picture of all of us." he chuckled.

We got back to work after we had a mini celebration for Lara, and I was working with Dr. Bailey this morning. We had a heart surgery patient, and I've never performed one, so I was nervous and excited at the same time.
"Dr. Bailey, I-I've never done this." I stuttered.
"You are a general surgeon, but you're telling me... you've never done a heart surgery before?"
"I've scrubbed in with Christina a few times, but I never actually got to do anything."
"Just take it slow and watch me, then, okay?"
"Alright." I nodded.
I put the patient under anesthesia and opened him up, then I let Dr. Bailey take over from there. She was explaining things to me as she went on, and I just stood there and watched.
"Do you think you got it now?" she asked, after awhile.
"Yeah, I think so."
"Good, then you get to finish."
She handed me a scalpel, and my hands started to shake a little. I felt like I was going to faint... this is like my first day all over again.
"You got this, George. You can do it." I heard Lara's voice in my head. She's the one I always hear in my head. She's the one I look to for... everything. I built up enough courage to do the surgery, and Dr. Bailey gave me words of encouragement as I went on also.
Once I finished (with a few struggles along the way), I closed him up, and Dr. Bailey patted me on the shoulder.
"You did good, George."
"Thanks."
I sighed and wiped the swear off my forehead.

Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed the chapter. I know it was short, but I can't help thinking about writing the next chapter for Lara's birthday party.
