Wetkit coughed for the third time that day. The other kits chased each others tails, but Wetkit close and opened his eyes, coughing and rasping a tongue over his back.

"When is Finfish going to return?" He begged the deputy for the third time that day. The deputy glared at him.
"She's gathering herbs. You can go swim and get her." He replied.

Splashpelt shook his head. "I can't leave them alone like this!" He cried.

"Dedication of a warrior. Finfish can check them. Or flush out the story of their old mother." He gave Splashpelt a look he didn't like. A look that was asking if he knew something about this. These kits weren't ever going to fit in if Splashpelt couldn't get a good story to fake why they were in the clan.

"Sandfang wasn't a story! Or old!" Ashkit squealed, peeping into the conversation. Oceanwater's eyes widened.

Splashpelt ushered the kits away. "Wetkit," He whispered gently. "I have to speak to you guys." The kit's eyes fluttered open.

"You have to keep Sandfang a secret. She isn't your mother anymore. Just pretend the clan is your family. Just pretend I'm Sandfang, okay? I'll take care of you just like she did." he promised.

"Then where's our rabbit hole? If you took us back to the bush, I could probably find it from there." Sandkit offered. He shook his head.

"You live here now. There is no rabbit hole. One day, your legs will grow big and strong, and I'll teach you to swim. You'll swim out to sea, and we'll catch fish to eat, and patrol together!" Wetkit rasped a mewl.

"But then...where will...Sandfang be?" He paused to cough a couple times in between a couple words.

"Not here. Sandfang isn't your mother. She isn't in your life." He replied, guilt creeping into his heart. They would never understand until they were older.

"Oh. Well, see you later, we're in trouble with Minnowegg and she was expecting us this morning." Sandkit mewled cheerfully.

As they padded away, Splashpelt called over his shoulder. "Wait! But it's late afternoon! Kits!"
