Splashkit felt something light tickling his nose. Blinking awake, he realized he was next to a bramble, which was releasing small mist over his face. Standing, he shook out all the water from his fur, and cleared his head.

"Oh, finally!" Crystalkit was bouncing around the den, covered in sand.

Crystalkit was the only other kit. As far as Splashkit knew, none of the other clans had two kits. They were ahead in that. Still, he knew their clan didn't have a deputy, but they would get one soon.

MinnowEgg, Splashkit's mother, poked her head into the den. "Currentstar wants to show you the water." She announced blandly, and her head vanished.

Splashkit padded out from the den, dirt and sand getting stuck to his paws. Currentstar was sitting by The Gateway, watching the water swirl.

Nobody knew how the gateway worked. Somehow, it just did. The water stayed outside the camp, but there was a way for the cats to get out and swim. Splashkit found himself hypnotized by the churning water. It looked like it was fighting to get in.

"These are the waves. One day, we will show you the currents, and you can swim out to the medicine island, and see for yourself what's past this point. For now, you're stuck in the camp with the elders." He grinned at his joke, and patted Splashkit's back with his tail lightly.

Well that was useless, Splashkit thought. I didn't even learn anything.

Crystalkit snorted. "That wasn't fun at all! I thought he was going to take us to swim!" She kicked a kelp ball from under its hiding spot, and settled for chasing it around with miniature paws.

Three warriors returned from a hunting patrol, holding fish in their big jaws. As they dropped them in the pile, Splashkit raced over to ask them how it went.

"Pretty smoothly. We hunted by the Fast Currents, because the fish were drawn through the pull. I caught this trout without trying! It swam right into my claws." Lightwater boasted.

Splashkit didn't know what that meant at all, but catching a trout without trying seemed pretty advanced. When Splashkit was a warrior, he would do things like that. Vowing to keep the promise, he took a tiny fish to eat for himself.

When he was done with it, he went to go pester Lightwater about the trout, but Minnowegg stopped him.

"What did the leader show you today?" She asked, licking a pad when she was done with her question.

"The gateway. He showed me the waves. He said one day he would show me the currents, and I could swim out to the island. Then he just finished and said I was stuck with the elders. Why would he only tell me that?" He asked his mother, pressing his body against her smooth fur.

"He probably thought you weren't ready to learn everything. Besides, now you know he'll show you the currents. That would be nice, having the leader teach you to swim. Now, run along now. I just wanted to hear what he taught you. Don't get under anybody's paws." She padded away first, disappearing into the gateway.

Splashkit felt like the water was calling him. One day, he would dash out into those smooth currents.
