"Crystalshine, Navyriver, and Kelpsand. Hunting patrol by the fast currents." He told the cats. They padded away, and slipped into the gateway.

It was only his first day as a deputy, and he already felt like it was a drag. Sometimes he felt like he sent too many hunting patrols and not enough border patrols. Sometimes he felt like they needed more warriors to do patrols. He never wanted to put brothers and sisters on the same patrol, but he had to. It was too hard to keep everything manageable.

He needed a rest. He curled up in his nest for some sleep, tired from the long day.

He opened his eyes almost immediately. Startled, Splashpelt sat up, gazing around. He was on the cliff again, to his surprise. Wind ushered him to the edge, and he had to peer down. The cats were yowling again, but louder than before. Blood was everywhere, more than last time. To his surprise, Sandkit and Ashkit were fighting, too. He guessed they were apprentices by now.

"Stop! Stop fighting! That cat might die!" He yelled, seeing so many dying, bleeding cats he couldn't count it anymore. The cats didn't look up. They fought like their lives depended on it.

Yowling, he tried to signal the cats to retreat, but they didn't. Where was Currentstar? Why wasn't he sorting this out? He searched the pelts, but didn't find a dark blue one. Currentstar must have died by now.

What did this mean? Why was Currentstar not there? He forced his eyes awake, and raced outside his den, searching for his leader.

Currentstar was sleeping in the Leader's den. He didn't move, and was barely breathing. "Currentstar?" He asked. "Currentstar, I need your help!"

The leader stretched his eyes awake to see Splashpelt. When he did, he rested his head on his paws. "Splashpelt." He whispered.

"Yes, it's me. I had another dream! We were fighting! You weren't in the battle." He nudged his leader's side, trying to poke out a response.

"I know, young tom. That is because I don't exist in that time. My last life is almost up. Lead the clan well, Splashpelt. I always knew you would." He again closed his eyes. Splashpelt nudged him again.

"You aren't dead yet! Please, Currentstar. I'm not ready." He gazed at his leader's pelt, wondering if this really was the end for him.

"It is time you led your clan." With that, the tom closed his eyes one final time. He let out a long breath, and didn't move.
