Waking groggily, Splashpaw rolled over in his nest. The paw poked him in the ribs, harder. Not training! Not again!
Shifting, he sat upright. "What?" He asked, feeling his nest calling him.
"Kelpsand wants you to help train us. You know, in battle. He wants you to show us those moves you were talking about." Aquapaw mewed quietly.
Aquapaw and Navypaw got their apprentice ceremony four sunrises ago. Aquapaw was alright, but Navypaw was just evil. Aquapaw got Kelpsand as a mentor, but since Crystalpaw already had Minnowegg, Navypaw got Currentstar instead. It gave him another thing to brag about.
As soon as he was an apprentice and learned a battle move, Navypaw requested a mock fight with Splashpaw. Since he couldn't deny, Splashpaw had to go up to the beach early in the morning. Leafbare was starting to pass, but cats still feared ice covering the water, so they couldn't train on the island.
Navypaw accidently fought with claws unsheathed, and gave Splashpaw a nick on the hind leg. Splashpaw had pinned him down and won, but the nick was a reminder of what Navypaw would actually do if you let him.
Stepping outside, he saw Crystalpaw was already there. She was trying to show Navypaw the fish flay move, but Navypaw wasn't really paying attention. Every time he she finished, he was more excited in doing it himself then paying attention how.
Aquapaw watched carefully. "You need to show me." She told him. Nodding, he padded over to an area with less seaweed everywhere.
He ducked under an imaginary opponent, but kept on all fours. Then, he scratched an imaginary hind leg, and darted out. "That's all there is to the move. Duck under your opponent without flipping over, and bite or scratch their hind leg." He explained.
"Can I try it on you with claws sheathed?" She asked, added the last part in quickly.
"Yeah, sure, but I'll do my best to prevent you from it!" He stood, ready for her to dive. Sure enough, she pressed her stomach to the ground, and dashed under him.
She was really fast, sheathing and unsheathing her claws as she ran. Twisting, he rolled over, leaving her in the same area. She leaped, trying to pin him down, but he had all four paws out, ready. Kicking out, he sent her flying across the sandy area, wincing when she yelped. Sitting up, she ran over, and dashed from the other side under him, and had an easier area to do the move. Keeping her claws sheathed, she made a smooth slap over his hind paws.
"Not bad. Usually, you go from the front of your opponent, so you can try the under roll belly rake at the same time. The more moves you do, the more chances you have of winning a battle." Splashpaw explained.
"Just like a little mentor. Let's head back to camp." Oceanwater told them.
