It's Time

Sometimes when I felt okay and I didn't have anything to do, I would put on a hat and a large hoodie that hid my bump, not that I was embarrassed of course, and I would wander into town. I had to sneak past the guards at the gate, but it wasn't that hard because they were human and didn't have strong senses of smell. I wouldn't do much other than walk around and observe what people were doing.

For as far as the world had come, this town was very old school. They still had stone houses that looked ancient, most families baked their own bread in their old stoves once a week, and kids played outside rather than video games. It was definitely different from where I lived most of my life, and certainly a cultural shock.

Walking down the small streets, I could see mother's with their babies or small children, smiling fondly at them as they did anything. I shivered at the thought of trying to be a good parent. I once read a book called 'Parenting for Idiots' but it wasn't exactly soothing, it talked about late nights and failures that were bound to come, it made me cringe.

"Mister? Could you help me?" I heard a light, timid voice ask from behind me. I turned around and knelt down, worried half to death.

"Yes, of course. What is it? What's wrong?" I asked frantically. I thought he was going to say he lost his mom, or some weird guy was chasing him in a dark jacket.

"My paper airplane got stuck in that tree, but I can't reach it." He said while looking at ground. I thought back to when I made a paper airplane for Ichiru, and then he got it stuck in a tree. I smiled at the boy.

"Sure." I said, and he nearly glowed with excitement. I followed him to the tree that was holding his paper airplane captive, seeing that it was pretty far up in the tree. "That's up there kinda high, bud. I'm going to have to take extreme measures to get this." I told him, and he frowned.

"I didn't mean to Mister." The boy told me, and I ruffled his hair.

"Well, lucky for you, I know how to climb trees." I said, and he smiled again. I grabbed a sturdy branch and began climbing like I did when I was kid. I felt like I had went back in time, I felt like I was still a normal boy that went home to his mom and dad and brother, one that lived a normal life. Before I knew it, I had reached the airplane and I grabbed it. I began my descent, but before I could go much further, a limb that was supporting most of my weight snapped, causing me to nearly fall out of the tree. "Fuck!" I yelled out of habit.

"Is that Spanish? Fuck?" The kid asked as I found my way safely to the ground. I snapped my head towards him and knelt in front of him.

"Promise me, that you'll never say that word again."

"Okay, I promise." The boy said, and I smiled at him. I held out the paper airplane to him, and he took it from me gently. "That's a pretty ring, where'd you get it?" He asked me, referring to my wedding band.

"My, uh, spouse gave it to me when we got married. You'll get one, some day when you're older and get married." I told him. He thanked me, and went on his way with his toy. I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like for me to raise my own kid, with Kaname of course. I noticed that I was unusually winded and exhausted for just having climbed a tree.

I took a breath, but as soon as I did, excruciating pain surged through my abdomen. It felt like my body was being ripped apart from the inside out. I wanted to scream out in pain, but I knew that would surely draw attention to me. No one outside of the royal family knew of me being pregnant, so that would not be good. It only got worse, the pain, and I tried to walk as fast as I could to try and get back to the palace but I couldn't do it. I found myself nearly falling against the wall of an old house that had a sign hanging which said 'mid-wife' in black letters.

I forced myself to the door, banging on it with every ounce of my being. When the lady finally came to the door, she seemed rather perturbed. I couldn't blame her, but at the same time I was nearly dying. She just looked at me for what seemed like the longest time while I tried to find a way to grit out words.

"Ma'am, please, I need help." I finally said, and she didn't say anything. I removed my hat, showing her who I was. Her eyes widened and she opened her door wider for me. She supported my weight and guided me to a room with an old rickety bed, but I wasn't particularly worried about the fact that it looked like it would fall apart any moment. I felt so much better, but I was still writhing in pain.

"What's the matter, your highness? Shall I call someone for you?" She asked me, her eyes frantic as she watched me. I grabbed at my stomach as I felt my ribs being nearly crushed as if something were growing inside me. Then it dawned on me. Something was growing in me.

"I'm pregnant. I think he's ready to get out of there. Ribs are being- fuck!" I yelled as I felt the first rib crack. Her eyes became determined then, and she nodded before running to the cabinet, and pulling out supplies.

"I'm going to give you a sedative, but it's not going to have enough time to work. You'll hope to pass out before I have to cut too far." She told me, making me look at her wildly.

"Do what?!" I exclaimed as she all but stabbed me with the syringe. I cringed at the pain, but I was thankful at the fact that it took my attention off of the pain in my abdomen. "Have you done this a lot?" I asked as I watched her work.

"I've done this plenty of times on women, can't imagine it's much different for you." She told me, but it didn't exactly ease my mind. Another, younger lady walked to the door, and looked worried. "Go get the prince."

"Yes ma'am!" The girl said without hesitation, while the lady continued working. She brought out a surgical knife and gloves.

"This is going to hurt a lot, so please try to be as still as possible. This is the only way to remove the embryo." She told me, and I just nodded. "You broke a rib."

"I'm very, very aware." I said through the pain. "Just- get it over with." I begged and she nodded, going to grab a gown to put over her clothes. The bed was a twin, so she wasn't going to have to hover over me awkwardly, not that it would have mattered either way. While she suited up, I felt another rib beginning to crack. "Why are my ribs breaking?"

"The baby has no way to get out, he or she is too big for you now and is just doing whatever he or she can to get out." She told me. "My name is Elaine, if you need to use it for any reason." Elaine said out of nowhere.

She finished with her outfit and walked back over to the bed. She asked me to remove my shirt, and I did the best I could without making it hurt worse than it already was. Just as she was about to begin, Kaname came racing to the door, nearly passing it before he realized I was in there. He came to the side of the bed where he would be out of the way.

"I'm about to start cutting." She told me, and I braced myself. She placed the knife to my stomach, pressed in and broke the skin. I involuntarily yelled out in pain, grabbing the edge of the bed as she cut my flesh. Kaname turned my head towards him, taking my hand into his own even though I had a death grip on it.

"Hey, it's okay. You're okay." He told me. He seemed calm but I knew he was freaking out nearly as much as I was. My vision went blurry a bit, and I could feel my head spin. I felt my body go numb, and soon after, my vision left completely and I was gone.
