Flashback Scene

I was cleaning up the shards of glass on the kitchen floor, sweeping them up and throwing them into the trash.

I wiped my forehead with the back of my hand. There was currently a heatwave, temperatures were in the triple digits, we couldn't afford air conditioning so I just had to make due.

After all the shards were picked up I grabbed a mop and started wiping down the floor. There were little droplets of my sweat littered on the tile floor. It was when I heard footsteps making their way towards me I tensed up, but I kept mopping, knowing better than to stop.

I heard him grunt as he knocked over items in the kitchen, I kept my head down and away from him as I continued working.

He chuckled. "This is what I like to see."

I glanced up and saw my father standing in the doorway watching me clean. I turned around so my back faced him, I couldn't bear looking at him any longer.

I didn't say anything and just kept cleaning. The kitchen was looking pretty close to being spotless. I was almost done when I heard a clatter.

I looked back to see that my father had knocked over a Corona, the tiny glass fragments shattered all over the kitchen. .

He chuckled, before he walked over to me. He grabbed my arm roughly, dragging me towards the glass. He pushed me towards it and I had to catch myself before I flew face first into the shards.

"You missed a spot."

I nodded meekly, I put down the mop and bent down to pick up the pieces of glass.I felt my hands quake and shake as I picked up each individual piece. I could feel my fathers beady eyes glaring holes into my scalp. I reached to grab the last piece, but his hands made it there first.

I peered up at him, pure evil shone through him. His lips curled into a smile. He brought his hand up to chuck the shard at me before he dropped it right in front of me. Taunting me with what he was capable of doing.

"I want this place sparkling before I get back..." He turned on his feet to leave. I let out a small sigh of relief.

"Make sure you clean yourself up too." he added. "We'll be having guests over tonight." He left the room laughing manically.

I sat still in the kitchen, as the front door slammed shut. I made a mental timer, to not move for ten minutes.

As soon as I felt the timer go off, I walked over to the front door and looked out through the peephole, and when I didn't see anyone I dashed to my room. I grabbed the bag that I hid in the back of my closet. I searched through it, desperately trying to find the money I would use to buy plane tickets. Relief filled my senses when I felt the couple hundred notes I had been saving up for three years.

I threw the bag over my shoulder and ran to my fathers room, I looked through his closet, then to his cabinets, not caring about the mess I was making. Because by the time he would come back, I would be long gone.

After five minutes of looking for my passport I found it. I quickly opened it and whimpered when I saw that I had a week before it expired, the time to leave was right now.
