Broken Two (1) - Believe It Or Not
"Trey, take your daughter from me. She wants you." Khayla said whilst biting her lip holding out Leah for me to take.
"My daughter?" I said with my eyebrow flexed as if to question her.
"For now, yes." She said as she handed me Leah who was giggling for some reason.
As I held Leah in my arms, a sudden smell of baby urine came over me. Khayla was laughing in her chair at my screwed up face.
"Leah, you stink! What has mummy been feeding you?" I wriggled my noise against hers making her giggle in the process. As I pulled away, she grabbed my nose.
"Oh Leah, you have my nose, who has my nose?"
Khayla walked out the room and came back several minutes later with what I need to change Leah. When she was firstborn, both of us hardly did anything for her as our families rushed round her and always wanted to help. I guess as the novelty wore off, we had to learn for ourselves.
"Babe, we need more diapers."
"When are they going to run out?"
"Tomorrow if we are lucky."
After moving into our own place, we just had about enough money to get the basics. Our home was in an apartment so it wasn't a house as such. We had two small bedrooms. One for Khayla and I and the other for Leah as she is sleeping more independently nowadays. The bathroom was even smaller but we just about manage to do what is needed. The kitchen and living room was in the same room which worked for us as Khayla's mum gave us a gift of a dining table and chairs. We use the same chairs to watch TV with. Our TV was about the size of two Leah's standing up but we was happy with it.
The rent on this flat accounted for about half of the money I and Khayla earn working when not at school. I finish school soon whereas Khayla went back to finish off what she left off. I've decided to not go to college as I'm comfortable in my job and trying to work my way up till I can go.
A quarter of the money goes on bills such as phone bills, electricity etc. The other quarter of the money went straight into Leah some days we skip meals just to make sure she is cared for the best way we can. The benefits from the government that are for Leah rarely stretch as there are some many things to pay for at ridiculous prices that set us back further. That's some of the reality of having a child.
"The rent is due tomorrow as well though Khayla!"
"Well what do you want me to do, tell Leah not to go to the toilet?"
"We don't have the money Khayla!"
"I'll ask my mum to help out, I guess."
Leah kicked me in the face as I tried to get a diaper on.
"Leah!" I playfully shouted at her and move her leg out of my face quickly allowing me to stuff the diaper on.
"Khayla, we can't ask your mum all the time."
"I know but what can we do?"
"Alright then but I don't like this."
"I know babe. I know."
As I pinned Leah back into her clothes, Khayla quickly disposed of the dirty diaper that lay on the ground beside me.
"You remember I'm going out today?"
"Yeah I know. Where were you going anyway?"
"Back home to my mums. Did you want me to take Lee (Nickname for Leah)?"
