As Rihanna ‘Man Down’ played throughout the house, I was sitting down tapping my foot to the rhythm watching people as they danced amongst each other. I was happy in my own thoughts with a drink in my hand which was brought out to me from Sasha.
Girls were wearing their most revealing attire. Boys were in their finest clothes as brought from Nike. Bums in the air as the rhythm took couples lower and lower till the floor was a barrier for them having sex. I was near the front door so I in a sense analysed all of the people that walked in and out of Sasha’s home. I could tell that the girl in the pink skirt which looked more like a belt was easy and by the end of the night, would be go home with a boy. I could tell that the boy who had the big chucky gold chain with colour co-ordination was or wanted to give off the impression of being a player. As soon as he entered with his boys, several heads turned. They knew it and used it to their advantage moving to the dancefloor. I watched the dancing. Thoughts were running through my head – this should be me and Trey. Not me alone.
“You alone?” No you don’t say. I am standing alone because I want to be alone AT A PARTY.
“What do you think?” I said rudely looking across to the person that spoke to me.
Ethan. His green eyes penetrated inside of me and I felt an instant blush come to my skin. If I knew it was him, I would have not said a word seeing as it was a bit rude and he was my neighbour.
“Sorry sorry, didn’t mean to get on your dark side haha.”
“No, it’s my fault. I’m a little touchy.”
“Why? Loosen up! It’s a party!” He did a little shuffle friendly nudging me whilst he walked it out.
“Damn you have moves there!” I laughed at him watching him embarrassing himself just to see me smile.
“See I know my moves are great, people always smile at me when I do them.”
“Because they are really bad.”
He did a fake shocked expression. We both burst out laughing once he went to fake cry. Lightheaded humour was more my thing. I found I hadn’t laughed in a while which was needed.
“You want to dance?”
I pulled a face. I hadn’t danced in a while and felt out of place all of a sudden.
“Come on, it would be fun!” He continued.
“Fine then” I said with a jokey reluctance.
He grabbed my hand and we walked into the living room with the music set to Vybz Kartel – Come Breed Me.
“KARTEL COME BREED ME!” I sang in time to the music.
“Really?” Ethan whispered in my ear then looked at me with a smirk as to say: Don’t you already have one. I laughed at his joke as we danced into the night.
*Trey’s Point of View*
“Uncle, I need to go home.” I said quietly as I sat our dinner table.
We had arrived home from Shanika’s a while ago and as I was tucking into my spaghetti, I couldn’t stop thinking about how I need to pick myself up and move on in some way.
“ Why?” My uncle looked up from his plate as though I had said something completely crazy.
“I need to gather my things out of the home and proberly move back into my mums.”
“Why don’t you stay here man?”
“Can I?” I said in disbelief. This was the man that the day I came told me I have about two weeks.
“Yeah, you’re my nephew so I may as well take some responsibility for you at the moment.”
“Would I be able to bring Leah around her though?”
“Yeah, once we make the house child friendly.”
“Thanks.” I smiled at him before returning to my meal. Priorities.
.....
After I washed up the plates, cutlery and glasses from dinner, I entered the living room and collapsed onto the sofa. My uncle had gone up to sleep in his bedroom so therefore I was free to roam around the house. In order to collect my things, I would have to arrange a time with Khayla as well as talk to her about arrangements to do with Leah.
I picked up my phone and search for Khayla. She was still listened underneath: My Baby. I stared at it for a little bit before editing it to Khayla. I loved her majorly. She was the mother of my child at the end of the day. Yet I couldn’t forgive her. Why do people you love hurt you? Some people would say it’s not a conscience decision yet if you love someone, everything you do should be with them in mind.
Her phone went to voicemail so I said: “Khayla, listen I have to talk to you about the arrangements for Leah. I also need to arrange a time with you to meet up to get my things. Call or text me. Trey.”
That was the most straightforward thing I’ve ever said to her which was a reminder to me of how far we have come in our love and hate relationship.
*Khayla’s Point of View*
It was 2am and I was just leaving the party with Ethan – hand in hand. He was a great guy. He had a son, Kion which was great as he would understand the pressures of raising a child at this young age. We didn’t drink at the party as we were fully aware of the fact we had to make it home at some point and collect our children in the afternoon.
“You want to come back to mine for a little drink?” Ethan said looking at me seriously.
I looked at him as though he was out of his mind. I don’t know what he took me for but as I looked back at him, I could tell that he sensed what I was showing on my face.
“I won’t try anything. I know you’re not that girl considering Trey just left you...” He continued, I told him about that as we were walking home and needed something to feel the time. I felt safe talking to him because he told me about him and his ex; Kion’s mother.
“...,I would treat you better than that.”
“Thanks Ethan.”
I smiled as I looked up at him and knew I made a friend that couldn’t come at a better time.
*Trey’s Point of View*
“Hi Leah.” I always spoke to her before she went to sleep. It wasn’t the same on the phone but I would have her back in my arms soon. Going away wasn’t hard but leaving her was. At least she was in capable hands. Though I may not be with Khayla and particularly like her as a person at the moment, I do respect her as a mother.
“Da..Da...Da...DDDD” She just muttering my name. Her first word officially was Mum but that was because I was working heavily through her first year of birth so she rarely saw me but I stepped it up as a dad in my role and soon she got familiar with me.
One of the worse feelings in the world was when your child didn’t know who you are. Yet when you are a young dad, you sacrifice that because you’re working all the time to provide the best for the child that you don’t even see. Sometimes I wonder if Leah was the only reason me and Khayla survived the years we were together.
