The red small flame in my hands felt warm and inviting like the aura from the void. I didn't realize that the flame grew slightly bigger in my small child like hands. "Violet it's too bright, put it out and quickly!" Miss. Ade said as she tried to keep Jessie in her arms. I looked up at her then at my hands, the red flame went from being large as a dragonfly to the size of a full grown bird.
'Yikes!' I removed my focus and energy from it, I saw it vanish into to thin air. I looked back at Ade then to Jessie, "I'm sorry Miss Ade, did I get us in trouble?" We looked around the town from where we were standing and noticed that some people had there lanterns on but no one bothered to come out.
"No it looks like we are fine, but please be more careful next time." She said as she walked ahead of me.
"Right," I responded softly to her. After a few more turns through the town, we finally approached the orphanage. "Miss Ade, what you said back at the house, were you being serious or were you just saying that?" I asked her as I followed her into the building.
"Why would I say something like that and not mean it?" She looked down at me a little confused.
"I don't know, I thought you only said that to bring me back." She stops in front me then we both remain silent. "Actually, I have an idea, you two aren't staying here in the orphanage anymore." She said as she turned to look at me in the eyes. "You two will be living with me in my cottage, its located outside of town." I felt my eyes light up in joy.
"Are serious?" I asked her in joy.
"Hush yes I'm serious." She chuckles softly and turned to walk to a bedroom. Ade laid Jessie onto a bed and sat on the one close by, "Come here, Violet." She softly patted the bed, I sat next to her and we began talking about if living with her would be good for me and Jessie. She brought up the fact that she thinks I'm a demon -that hurt a little, I don't want to think of that- she even said that's another reason why she wanted me as her daughter. After what felt like an hour we began talking about Jessie, she thinks Jessie would be a great daughter and sister. She has a pure spirit, that she does. Without realizing how long we have been talking the sun began to rise. "Oh my well would you look at that, I have to get the other children up for the day." Ade stood up and hugged me tightly and walked to the door. "You girls stay in here and rest as long as you need, I'm going to get some papers to adopt both of you." She showed me a big smile and walked out with the door closing behind her.
I got up and went to lay next to Jessie. I pulled the blanket over the two of us and fell asleep.
A strange voice spoke, "You did well violet." I looked around, I was in the void again. "There is something you need to remember about Jessie." The voice pauses as a pink door with a stained glass window in the middle -it was gorgeous- "go through the door and I'll tell you." The voice seemed familiar but I ignored that and approached the door. I hesitated at first but if it's important I must.I opened the door, a white light blinded me at first. I saw a tree it was tall and gorgeous, green bright grass surrounding me and the tree. "Jessie was a loving child, she had a family that loved her dearly." The voice said as I walked around and saw a huge house it seemed like a three-story building. "but one tragic night a fire broke out." I could see flames and hear terrifying screams and cries. "It was no accident." I look over to my right, it was the mother and son I met at the house that was falling apart. I felt tears fall down my cheeks, I look to my left there stood a younger Jessie.
"
Why are you showing me this?" I softly asked the voice.
"You will see." A dark figure approached me, it made me jump a little. "I'll tell you the rest when you get older, but for now watch over her." The figure put its cold mist hand on forehead. "I need you to wake up now."
The sun was shining brightly through the bedroom window. I slowly sat up trying not to wake Jessie up. I noticed to my right by the closet was a brown desk, with a beautifully carved chair. I got off the bed to look around some more, I went directly to that chair. It had a few blue jays carved on the back with some flowers. 'This is miss. Ade's room.' I remember her telling me she loved birds and flowers when I was 8. We use to watch birds and sometimes feed then crumbs from our slices of bread. Now that I'm 14 we don't really do much together. I heard the door handle turn to a click with a terrible screech from the door. I stood up and walked over to the door, it was Miss Ade, she had food with her. "Good morning Violet, how is Jessie doing?" I looked over at Jessie she was still out.
"I'm not sure."
Miss Ade sighed heavily and walked in to place the food on the empty bed. "I brought food for you two."
