Chapter 21
.:Recap:.
Tears came to my eyes as they came to hers, and as our eyes met, I knew. It was silent, but mutual. I wasn't going to get shit from Jamie this year. She wasn't going to get any shit from me. I was innocent in this; I hadn't done anything wrong to get Spencer to be mine. And Jamie was a broken shell. She had pushed Spencer away starting from that night and I had torn him away completely.
I, Jessica Johnson, and Jamie Appleby, were at some kind of truce.
.:Story Start:.
I lay on my bed at about 6pm, texting Spencer. Steph was doing overnight homework - stupid teachers setting homework due the next day - and no one had come to visit us. Spencer and I were having a particularly disturbing yet amusing conversation about ice cream and homeless people when Steph finished and turned her swivel chair round to gaze at me seriously.
“You and Jamie,” she started, and I rolled my eyes.
“Steph, we’ve been through this a hundred times.”
“Apparently it’s not enough. Why would she want to be in a truce with you? She was a bitch all of last year! You don’t seriously expect her just to throw it all away?”
I sighed, putting my phone down, and sat up, my gaze averted to the floor. “Steph, you weren’t there. You didn’t see her. She was...tired. Fed up. When I mentioned Spencer’s sister she just kind of clammed up. Honestly, I don’t even know how to describe it. But she’s not the same girl anymore, Steph. I don’t know why. She’s just changed,” I said softly, finally meeting my best friend’s green-eyed gaze.
She looked pensive, her eyebrows furrowing as she thought. “Well, I guess I trust you so...” she sighed. “It’s just, I know how much she wanted Spencer last year and I’m just worried she might do something to break you two up and hurt you...I know you really love each other, but still. You and Zack really loved each other, and look what happened,”
I bit my lip at the mention of Zack, and what happened last year.
“I know. But I’m done fighting. And she sure as hell didn’t look up to fighting of any kind. Honestly, she looked so ill.”
“Jess...”
“I really appreciate your concern Steph, and I’m so glad to have a best friend like you,” I smiled sincerely. She knew to drop it, and I slumped back onto my pillows, picking up my phone.
“Oh, for god’s sake, just go fuck him already. Don’t bother with all the sexting.”
I properly burst into fits of uncontrollable hysterics. My stomach soon began to hurt as Steph just watched me with a bored expression. When I finally managed to calm down, I wiped the tears from my eyes and shook my head, an amused grin still on my face as I unlocked my phone.
Steph is accusing us of sexting, and just told me to go fuck you already...
I know you want it.
-.-
Xxxx ;)
This banter continued for another hour and then Steph finished her homework and we went to go eat dinner with our friends. As we walked through the corridor to the hall, I saw a familiar blonde mop and grinned, running and jumping onto that muscled back of his.
Spencer laughed as I yelled ‘boo!’ at him, and allowed me to ride piggy back on him to the hall, with my head snuggled on his shoulder as he continued his conversation with Jared, a noticeable spark in his eyes. I was glad I made him happy. He deserved it, after everything he’d been through. Steph did the same to Jared, which amused me, and the four of us travelled in that fashion to the hall.
