SLADE

Mating season was a blessing from the goddess herself. A way of showing us that she had forgiven us for the past mistakes. When werewolves first started walking on earth, it was by a set of rules that got broken. We were made stronger than humans with a set of abilities. No werewolf was allowed to get into a physical relationship with a human. The rules were broken and with that came dire punishment. Our kind started breeding with human woman. They got killed either by birth or while breeding. Humans were weak. They're not made for breeding, especially with our kind.

The Goddess took it as an insult. She set out to punish us and later when she thought that we had learned our lesson, she forgave us. In return for two months out of the year mated couples have a higher chance to reproduce. Mating season. I've always considered it a blessing, but right at this moment it's a curse.

Alexi slept peacefully in the bed. Her chest rose and fell with every breath she took, long lashes fluttered against her cheeks, pink cupid bow lips parted slightly. Her skin looked paler than normal no doubt it's because of what happened earlier. The smell of her blood still filled my nostrils making my wolf pace uneasily in the back of my mind. He wanted a taste, just a little taste. I frowned. Something isn't right here. The only other time I've felt like this was...

I stumbled backwards sucking in a sharp breath. It can't be! Without sparing her another glance I raced out of the room. Fury stumbled back opening his mouth to curse at me. I growled at him racing down the stairs. Seconds later my brother appeared in front of me.

"What happened?"

"Move," I snarled. He only raised an eyebrow making me more agitated. "Fury, my wolf is ready for a fight. Please move."

"What happened?"

I swallowed allowing my eyes to trail over my twin. Once upon a time we looked so alike, we were the same but not anymore. Not after the kidnapping. He's still my brother yet a stranger. I sighed running a shaky hand through my hair. It would kill him if I tell him what I suspected.  No, Fury can't find out until I'm hundred percent sure of it.

"It's been a long day," I said. "The attack and now this. It's like she's a magnet for trouble."

Fury nodded shifting from foot to foot. I noticed how tense he looked. His eyes looked darker than normal and it meant both beasts were closer to the surface than they should be. Warning lights flickered in the back of my mind. I stepped closer letting out a low growl.

"Fury-"

"I'm going out to hunt."

He disappeared before I could say anything. I sometimes hated his hybrid genres. Especially when he used it to disappear when we need to talk. Shaking off the thought I made my way down the hall. My steps flattered when I reached the door to the basement. All our memories were buried in there. The happy ones and the sad ones. My heartbeat increased as I unlocked the door slowly pushing it open. It creaked breaking some of the silence.

"It just can't be true."

The thick photo album dropped to the floor next to the five others. I reached for the next one blowing the thick layer of dust from the top. My eyes darted around taking in the shelves of old books. Everything about my family history was written in these books. The album's contained photos of every member. Including our mate.

Sharp pain filled my chest by just thinking of her. Of that horrible night she died in the blazing fire. We were too late to save her, she burned to death. Her screams still echoed in my head whenever I think of it.

I shook the images away concentrating on the photo's instead. The time dated back almost ten years ago. We had just turned eighteen when we met her. A shy mysterious girl barely in her teens. I turned the page feeling the colour drain from my face. Large chocolate brown eyes stared up at me. Reddish brown hair framed a thin, pale face with pink lips pulled up into a smile.

"It can't be!" I muttered. With a shaky hand I pulled the picture out of the album.

I did the same with all the others. Pulling all her pictures from them and placing them aside. The pile of photos got higher and higher as I went through the album's. All the memories, every single moment we've shared with her, like a movie being watched repeatedly.

The last album only held two photos. One where we all stood together at the annual barbecue at the old pack house. And the other was one of her taken the day before she died. I snapped it shut after taking out the photos. Collecting the others I made my way upstairs. Flicking the single light off, I stepped out of the basement closing the door behind me. I made sure to lock it again before making my way towards the study.

I cleared my desk spreading the pictures in order onto it. It all fit in perfectly, just like I remembered. The times we spend together and then the sudden deaths. All different and worse than before. The last time she died we all believed that she wouldn't be reborn again.

But she's here. Upstairs in our bed after being attacked for the second time on our land. How's it possible? It can't happen, not again.

"Mine! Mate!" My wolf chanted over and over again.

I can't do it. The pain of losing her before almost destroyed us. I nearly lost my brother because of it, because of her. What's the use of repeating the past if it will only end the same?  She's going to die eventually.

Again. But this time we won't feel anything. I won't allow that, no, this time it would be different. I collected the photo's walking over to the dying fire. Throwing in another piece of wood I waited for the first flame to rise. The first photo fell into the burning ember's. Then another but before I could throw the others in, a scream from upstairs snapped me into action.
