Jared's POV
In the past few weeks, there have been good days and bad days. Evan has gotten worse, but he, Connor, and I have gotten closer.
We spend a lot of time together, of course. I try to spend as much time as I can with Evan and Connor.
We were sitting on Evan's bed. He had his laptop open on his lap, watching vine compilations. Connor and I were watching them with him, but really we were watching Evan laugh.
He had the cutest laugh. I loved seeing it and I know Connor did, too. Evan leaned his head against Connor's shoulder. Connor had arm around him, his hand stroking my hair.
I leaned into the touch. I listened to the sound coming from the laptop.
"It is Wednesday, my dudes... AHHHHHHHHH..." I'm sure you've seen that one. I don't feel the need to explain it.
Time past, as time does. We watched many iconic vines, a lot of which I could quote from memory. I mentioned my secret power to do so, and Connor told me to try. So, I quoted, by his count, 38 different vines.
Evan thought it was funny. Connor thought it was weird. I claimed I had a good memory, but I have just seen so many vines so many times, that they are ingraved into my brain.
Anyway, we decided not to do much that day. Evan said he was kind of tired, so we stayed in his bedroom for the day.
Connor started talking about a musical that he liked. He told us the plot and I already liked it.
So, he pulled up a bootleg, which was professionally filmed instead of illegally, and pressed play.
The title flashed across the screen and played music. And then, singing. What did I expect? But these people were really good.
We were halfway through the first act when Evan say up suddenly and put his hands on his chest.
I sat up and touched his arm. "Hey, Ev, what is it?"
He took a breath before saying, "M-my chest... Jared, i-it hurts..."
Connor jumled up and said, "Evan, I'm getting your mom. Okay?"
Evan nodded. I put my arm around him, teying to comfort him. What do I do?
Evan's POV
My chest. It felt as if I was being stabbed. No, worse than that. It felt like my heart was being contracted. Like a boa constrictor had chosen to squeeze the lofe out of it.
That probably doesn't describe it well enough, but nothing can adequately describe the pain I felt.
Connor came back in with my mom. I saw her in the doorway oit of my peripheral vision. I was staring at ny knees. I felt Jared's arm around me.
I was trying to focus my vision, it was getting kind of blurry. I heard talking but I couldn't tell what the voices were saying.
"It hurts..." I murmured to myself, to anyone who might listen. Please stop the pain. I can't take this anymore. It felt like it was getting worse. A squeezing, stabbing pain in the middle of my chest.
Jared whispered in my ear, "I know jt hurts, Ev, but you gotta stay awake, okay? Stay awake a little longer, okay? We're getting you some help."
I nodded my head, understanding his words, but not quite the meaning behind them.
The edges of my vision were turning black. I knew I was losing consciousness, and I couldn't do anything about it. I tried to breathing made the pain worse. Not breathing made it worse. Anythong kind of stimuli made it worse. It seemed to be getting worse on its own.
I took Jared's hand, not looking up. He squeezed my hand and I tried to squeeze back. I couldn't. Not quite. He knew I was struggling to simply squeeze his hand, and he said something I didn't understand.
My vision was getting worse by the minute, and the next thing I knew, I had passed out.
---------
I woke up, but didn't open my eyes. The flourescent lights of a hospital room shone through my eyelids. I felt someone holding my hand. I squeezed the hand, though I didn't know who it was.
"Hey, Ev. Connor! Heidi! He's awake!" It was Jared's voice. I opened my eyes with a struggle.
I turned my head in the direction of his voice. He turned to me.
"Hey, Ev. How're you feeling?" He asked.
"Okay. What happened?" I asked in a quiet voice.
"Well," Jared said. "You passed out after saying your chest hurt."
I nodded. Jared continued. "Bad news. You know that you've been getting worse." I nodded. "The doctor said that you may have to have a heart transplant."
I let the news sink in. I stayed silent for a bit. I didn't know what to say to that.
Mom and Connor came into the room. Connor came over to me and kissed my forehead.
"We were so worried," he whispered to me.
"I know. I'm sorry."
"Hey," he said. "It wasn't your fault. None of this is anyone's fault. It just happened and we have to deal with it. But we're going to deal with it together. I promise."
I nodded. Jared agreed with him.
Mom came over to me and Connor moved over to let her get closer to me. She hugged me, not too tight, but tight enough.
She told me what Jared had told me, but a little more detailed.
"So, your heart is just getting worse. It's working much harder, but with worse results. At this point, medication won't do much. The doctor doubts that it would help at all. So, a transplant could save your life, honey." She said all of this while holding my hand.
I thought this over. If a transplant would save my life, then we would do that. From what I was being told, it was the only option.
I nodded to Mom. She nodded back.
Connor said, "So, if that's what Evan wants to do it, then we'll do it."
Mom turned to Connor. "Well, you see, there's a waiting period. We don't know how long it will take."
Connor nodded. I looked around at everyone. They all looked so worried. I wanted to cheer them up, but didn't know how.
I was scared. How long would it take for me to get a match? Would I die before then? I had so many questions. But I had to focus on making everyone else feel better.
I decided to tell a joke only Jared and Connor would understand.
"Hey, why did the chicken hide in the closet?"
Jared grinned. Connor asked, "Why?"
"Because he was gay."
Connor and Jared bursted out in laughted. Mom looked a bit confused but she smiled at the joke.
Jared calmed down a bit and said, "Okay, I've got one. Why didn't the skeleton cross the road?"
I said, "Why?"
"Because he didn't have the guts."
I laughed. Connor facepalmed. He said, "These are so stupid..."
"Oh, you love them," I said.
"And us," Jared added.
Connor chuckled. "Yeah, unfortunately."
"What?!" Jared exclaimed.
Okay, that one took a while. And while I was writing, I got off of it for ONE MINUTE and it deleted a good portion of what I wrote. So. I hope you like what I so painstakingly wrote.
And EllieTyler and Hannah, I hope you like the jokes.
