TW: homophobic slurs, abuse, curse words
Connor's POV
I wish I could say that Evan got better over the next few days, but I can't. He got worse, if anything, which was expected. Heidi, Jared, and I seemed to have unspoken conversations regarding, well, all of this.
I tried to stay calm in all of it, but I cannot describe how difficult it was. Seeing Evan have coughing fits when it hurt him to move... It was almost too much. I could see Jared struggling along with me. I'm not really sure what to say on the situation. We were simply waiting. We were waiting for a new heart for Evan.
We were sitting on the couch, like always, with Evan in the middle of Jared and me. Evan was leaning his head on my shoulder.
Jared was talking about different topics, bouncing around so much, I didn't really know what he was talking about anymore. He looked pretty enthusiastic, though. He kept making Evan laugh, which was a plus.
I was trying to focus on what Jared was saying, but I was having trouble. I was pretty lost in thought.
I was just thinking. Not really about anything particular. Just thinking.
I was brought back to reality by Evan laughing. It was just a croak coming from him, but it counted as laughter. I smiled to myself.
I can't really say much about the day. Not much happened. Nighttime rolled around soon enough.
"Hey," I said, "it's getting kind of late-"
I was cut off by my phone ringing. I looked at the callet ID and answered.
"Hey, Zoe. What's up?"
"Hey, Con. Larry and Cynthia said that you gotta come home. They're mad." Zoe sounded rushed and a bit scared.
"Okay. I'm on my way. See you."
"See you." She hung up.
I turned to Evan and Jared. I said, " I'm sorry. I have to go home. Its important."
Jared said, "It's okay, Con. I'll drive you. I don't want you walking alone this late at night. I'll be right back, Ev, okay?"
Jared kissed Evan quickly before getting up. I gave Evan a peck on the lips before saying goodnight and following Jared.
We got into his car and he backed out of the driveway.
"So," he said, "do you know what's so important?"
"I do not. Zoe said my parents are mad. I'm not leaving her alone with an angry Larry Murphy."
"Good call," Jared replied. He had never met Larry, but I had told him enough stories.
I nodded and said, "Yeah. I hope it's not too bad."
Jared agreed and turned onto a street close to my house. Jared knew where I lived since he had driven me home on several occasions, mostly late at night.
I could see my house come into view and inwardly groaned. I didn't know what was to come, and I didn't want to know.
Jared pulled up in front of my house and stopped. "Good luck. Please be safe and take care of your sister."
"Will do. Thanks for driving me."
"Anytime." Jared kissed me, hard, before I got out of the car.
Before I closed the door, I said, "I'll try to get to Evan's house tomorrow. If I don't... Well, I'll let you know. I love you, Jared."
Jared replied, "I love you, too, Connor. Hopefully, I'll see you tomorrow."
