Twenty Eight

Shawn's POV:

A couple of weeks have passed since the release of "Life of the Party." It was the morning of July 12, 2014 when I woke up to a call from Mr. Andrew Gertler.

Shawn: ""hello?"'I said while wiping the sleep from my eyes.

Andrew: "turn on channel 167 now!"

I ran downstairs, with Andrew still on the phone. I grabbed the tv remote and turned on 167 like he instructed. It was one of those celebrity news channels. Why was I watching this?

Just as I was about to question Andrew, I heard my name on the tv and turned up the volume.

TV: "vinestar turned musician, Shawn Mendes released his first ever single titled 'Life of the Party' a few weeks ago. Thanks to some of Mendes' loyal fans, the song received downloads from the second of its release, which came as no surprise, because have you heard the vocals on this boy?!" The reporter said.

I smiled, and she continued talking.

TV: "but that's not what we're here to talk about. As of this morning, 'Life of the Party' landed itself a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as number 24, making this not only Shawn's first ever single, but also his first song in the top 40!"

My eyes got big, but I realized that wasn't even the best part as she continued talking.

TV: "That's not all! It's clear that this boy is here to stay, his first ever single has already broken a record! Landing the #24 spot on the chart officially makes Mendes the youngest artist to debut in the top 25 with a debut song on the Billboard Hot 100 at the young age of 15 years, 11 months, and 4 days. The song also debuted as number five on the Hot Digital Songs chart with 148,000 downloads."

My jaw dropped as the reporter finished talking and signed out.

My song is on the Billboard Hot 100?

My song was in the top 40?

148,000 people downloaded it?

I broke a record?

That last one was the hardest for me to grasp, but it all seemed so unreal. I felt like I was about to wake up, and all this was gonna be a dream. I had no words.

All of a sudden I heard Andrew's voice, forgetting that I left him on the line.

Andrew: "Shawn? Are you still there?"

Shawn: "y-yeah I'm right here" I said as I turned off the tv and ran my fingers through my hair.

Andrew: "so? How are you feeling" he said. I knew I couldn't see him, but I could tell he had the biggest smile on his face on the other side of the line, but I guarantee my smile was twice as wide.

Shawn: "Andrew, this is unreal" I said. That was the only thing on my mind.

Andrew: "I know!" He exclaimed. "I just got off the phone with some people from island. We knew the song would do well because of how much your following has grown, but this well?? Shawn, we weren't expecting this. We all know how talented you are, but artists don't break records with the first song they ever release! You should be so proud of yourself boy!"

Shawn: "y-yeah, I guess" I stuttered. It was all I could manage to get out.

Andrew: "alright, I'm going to let you process this, but I'll be in touch"

Shawn: "o-okay" I said before he hung up and I leaned forward on the couch putting my head in my hands.

How is this my life? This can't be real was all I could think before I heard my sister scream. She ran into the room and jumped into my arms.

Aaliyah: "did you hear?!?!" She squealed

Shawn: "yeah, I did" I said, scratching the back of my neck

Mom: "hear what?" She asked, entering the room with my dad

Aaliyah: "Shawn's song broke a world record!"

Dad: "what?!" He yelled in disbelief.

So I explained everything to them. My mom made my favorite breakfast item, blueberry muffins to celebrate, and my dad declared that we were going to go out for a celebratory dinner that night. I laughed as they left the room and I called Alexa to tell her the news.

She freaked out, as expected. I laughed while she screamed into the phone. I think she was saying how proud she was, but then again, when Ally gets excited to the point of screaming, it's hard to tell what she is actually saying. She agreed to join us for dinner tonight before she had to hang up the phone.
