Chapter 23
The next day at school I was only fifteen minutes into my morning study hall, when my guidance counselor, Ms. Thatcher came to pull me out of class. She had heard about my mom and was concerned about me and wanted to see if I was ok. "I'm doing ok," I said. "You sure I know you have been dealing with a lot since you've moved here, I'm here for any counseling you may need, whether it is academically or personal issues I'm here, so feel free to vent on me anytime." Ms. Thatcher had said. "I appreciate your concern, but I am a very resilient person, I take everything as it comes, I am doing ok, thank you though." "Any time Laura, I also pulled you out of class because we need to pre-register you for classes for next semester, I know you want chemistry and pre-calculus, for your math and science classes, you do need to take general psychology either next semester or next fall semester it's your choice when you want to take that. You have to take the history of oncology that's the only class available to you next semester as far as your core curriculum classes are concerned. You have a choice between gym or a health class, and then there is a study hall or free elective classes that you always have a choice on. Or you could do another requirement class if you want it's up to you how tough of a course load you want next semester. what are your thoughts?" Ms. Thatcher had asked. "I'll do general psychology next semester that's fine the medical class, pre-calculus, and chemistry, I will do health and the two study halls," I said. "Great let's get the paperwork done and then I will let you go, the bell is going to ring in five minutes to go to lunch anyways."
So we finished up getting me pre-registered for next semester when I went to my locker put my books away and grabbed my lunch then went and met up with my girls at our usual lunch table in the cafeteria. "Do you have the day off from the shop today?" asked Kimberly taking a bite of her cheeseburger. "I'm going to see my mom after school, then I'm closing up the shop tonight, but it's an easy shift I told my aunt I'd do five to nine, today so that she's not there all day and can get home to her kids. but I can study in between customers which is what I usually do anyway when I have the night shift," I said taking a bite of my turkey sandwich.
Just then my phone was vibrating, and no one ever calls me when I'm in school, so I looked down to see who it was, it was the hospital. "Oh no, it's the hospital," I said as I picked it up to answer it. "Hello," the doctor on the other end of the phone went on to explain that my mom was experiencing some internal bleeding, from the surgery that she was exhausted and that the blood transfusion she had is not helping her at all and that there really is not much of anything they can do to help her. If she loses any more blood, there's a chance we could lose her. So there just going to keep her comfortable, whereas I had to inform them that she does, in fact, have a DNR. She's always said if anything happens to her to not let her be a vegetable hooked up on machines and to just let her go, as hard as it may be. "Well I was planning on coming in after school, so I should I maybe come in now just in case something happens to her?" "Yes, that would be a good idea." So I thanked the doctor and hung up. "I got to go talk to them in the office and get excused from medical terminology; I got to go be with my mom she's not doing good." "Ok go, well see you later." Maggie had said. So I went and explained things in the office and to my medical terminology teacher who gave me a copy of today's lesson plan and the homework that I had to do for tomorrow. I went and got my belongings together at my locker, and then as I was leaving the building, I called Aunt Shelia to tell her to close down the shop and to meet me at the hospital.
