The next morning I woke up with a smile and went to get ready. I walked down the stairs and ate breakfast before going out to Dek's car. He smiled at me and we drove off. When we arrived at school he went with his friends and since I saw Mark with Sasha and the others I decided to go up to Matt who was alone.
"Hey" I said smiling and when he looked up he smiled too.
"Hey there, how is it going?"
"Better than ever" I said grinning, I saw he didn't believe me but let it slide.
We kept talking for a while until it was time to class. He went with me to my classroom door and left to go to his own. I went inside and took a seat, paying close attention to class. The school day was a blur, and before I knew it the final bell rang. I gathered my things slowly and took my time walking towards Derek car, so there wouldn't be any chance of seeing Mark.
It's now been a month since then. Mark and I had slowly drifted apart, now he spends his time only with his girlfriend Sasha. Matthew and I are very close, I know he still have feelings for me but I don't know if I'm ready to open up just yet. I talk with Brittany thrice a week and she is very happy I woke up and everything.
Today was graduation day for Derek. He was going off with Alice to Princeton University. It was very far from where we live (Florida) I'll miss them a lot, but they will come for vacations and a weekend every two moths or so. I was sitting between my mom and dad while we waited for Derek's name to be said. After what seemed like hours he was called and we all cheered.
However the worst was taking pictures, oh how I dreaded that moment. Finally we went home to the barbecue e were throwing. I changed from my red just above the knees dress into a black skirt and white singlet with black and white flats. I grabbed my hair in half a ponytail and went downstairs. The first one I saw was Matt and I hugged him tightly.
"Hey there!" he said smiling while looking at me "You look really pretty Sam"
"Thank you, you're not too bad" I said winking and we laughed.
Just then I saw Alice, I squealed and ran to hug her. She laughed and I let go.
"I'll miss you" I said completely serious and the corners of her slips turned upwards slightly in a sad smile.
"I'll miss you too lil' sista" she called me by a nickname she had came up with two weeks ago.
"Well enough of being all moody, let's go and enjoy the party!" I exclaimed loudly and locked our elbows before going outside the sunny and beautiful day.
We all had lots of fun and the food was delicious! But Dek will get going tomorrow morning. I sighed and felt someone's arm wrapped around my shoulders. I looked up to see Matthew smiling down to me and I smiled too.
"It was a...interesting year, don you think?" he asked me looking up to the sky.
"Yeah, many things happened" I answered him looking up too.
"Well I'm, glad I got to become your best friend"
"Yeah, who would've thought? From being my brother's enemy, to couple, break up and now friends" I said thoughtfully.
"Well, we'll see what happens next year. It's sure to be a promising one" he said looking at me intently.
"About that...I have something to tell you" I said looking at his eyes and they lit up.
"And what could that be?" he was smiling widely and I hated to break it up to him.
"Next year I might, I don't know....Go to study in London" I finished looking away.
"WHAT?" he almost screamed and I'm sure the smile faded.
"Don't be like that! It will only be for the first semester, until Christmas break" I answered still not looking at him.
"But...but, why?"
"I felt I needed a new start and besides I will be going to the same school as Britt"
"What about us? Christine, Audrey, Mike, your cousin and...me?" his voice was breaking and I turned my head to see him with his head down, I lifted his chin and looked him in the eyes.
"It will be only a couple of months, I'll be back before you know it"
"Don't do this Sam, your rushing things up. Think about it" he pleaded me.
"I already have, I've been thinking about this for a month now"
"I'll miss you" he finally said hugging me tight.
"I'll miss you too, but we both need to take a breath of fresh air"
I felt him nod and I hugged him tight. We still have summer before us and he's the first one I have told besides my parents, I have to tell Derek and my others friends. I have a feeling Mike won't like this, but he will understand. I wonder how the summer and next year will turn out.
My thinking was cut short when I felt the floor disappear beneath my feet. Matt was carrying me bridal style back to where everyone was.
"Matthew! You better put me down now!" I told him while glaring and he laughed.
"Nah, I'm comfortable like this" and he threw me in the air, I was petrified and thought I will fall, I will fall. But he caught me and I smacked him in the arm.
He arrived to where everyone was and they all turned to us with a smile across their faces. Oh no! They were already assuming things. I hid my burning face in his chest and muttered:
"I'll kill you"
"I'll like to see you try" I could feel the laugh shake his body.
Oh, I surely needed a gulp of fresh air.
