Third Person POV
"Jimin?...What's wrong?" Haeun is puzzled as to why the boy is here so late at night. But then she remembers that he too went out looking for answers about her memory problem. But...she sorted it all out with Taehyung. There wasn't anything crazy to be worried about...Right?
"Can I come in?" Haeun doesn't hesitate for even a second before moving out of the way to give room for Jimin to walk into the apartment room.
"Jimin...you're scaring me...what's going on?" Jimin stares deeply into Haeun's eyes and bites his lip. He's scared too. He realizes that he didn't even think through what he's planning to say to her. How to ease her into the idea that her boyfriend is actually dead. But it's too late now. He's already here in front of her.
Hesitantly, Jimin brings his hands up to hold hers. Haeun flinches slightly from the unexpected touch, but she stays in this position, giving Jimin a questioning look.
"Haeun...no matter what...promise me that you will listen to what I'm about to tell you. Okay? Know that what I'm about to tell you is for your own good."
"Jimin...you're really scaring me...why are acting all serious...I-"
"Just...just promise me." Haeun doesn't say anything at first as she looks down to their intertwined hands. But eventually, her gaze falls back onto Jimin's face and she nods.
"I promise." While still hand in hand, Jimin moves to sit down on her sofa, Haeun following his movements.
"That day at the lake...you said that you dreamed of being on your anniversary with Taehyung...You remember?" Haeun nods her head, still uncertain as to where Jimin was going. "Okay...well...it's not easy for me to say this...but..." Jimin pauses, unable to continue. He sees the curiosity and worry in her eyes. He sees her expression filled with anticipation for what he's about to say. But he just can't bear to see what her eyes will hold once he breaks the news.
The sadness. The pain. The confusion. The denial. He can already imagine it all.
And he's not ready for it.
But he knows that if he puts it off. If he thinks that he could just save her from that pain just for another minute...it will soon turn to hours, to days. He'll never be ready for what's come. And so it's now or never.
"That day wasn't the only dream. Everything has been a dream Haeun. For the past year...every moment you've spent with Taehyung...it wasn't real. It was all a dream." Haeun doesn't respond. She doesn't show any sign of even understanding a word that left Jimin's mouth. Instead, she stares blankly forward, the only sign of movement from the blinking of her eyes and the heaving of her chest.
"What-what do you mean Jimin..."
"What I'm saying is...Taehyung's dead, Haeun...He's been dead...for the past year." Haeun instantly breaks hold of Jimin's hands and stands up from the sofa.
"What the- what are you talking about Jimin? No...that's not true...it can't be...I just saw him...no...no" Every word escaping her mouth is followed by an exasperated breath. Jimin moves forward to hold her and give her comfort, but she flinches out of his grasp, stepping back away from him. The action breaks Jimin's heart. He feels an ache in his heart, but he shakes it away knowing that she's just hurt right now.
"I-I'm sorry Haeun...but it's the truth. There was a car crash a year ago. You were in the car too. He...didn't make it. But you surviv-"
"Jimin, stop talking...just stop! Stop saying that! Wh-why are you lying!" Tears are flowing freely down her cheeks. She doesn't believe it. She doesn't want to believe any of it. But the thought of it pushes her over the edge, and she can't help the tears that are escaping.
Seeing the tears of the girl he loves, tears threaten to leave Jimin's eyes as well. And soon a single tear falls down his left cheek.
"Haeun! Please...please listen to me. It's the truth! Don't you remember Namjoon? Namjoon is Taehyung's brother! He's the one who told you the news back then! Please Haeun. Please try to remember."
"Stop lying Jimin! No...Namjoon is Taehyung's friend. That's what he told me!"
"Haeun, you can't listen to him anymore! That Taehyung...that Taehyung is only in your head! Anything he says to you is just something that you want to believe! But it's not real!" Haeun shakes her head viciously. She feels like her head is about to explode right off. All of this is happening so suddenly. She has to get away from all of this...She needs a second to calm down...
"Jimin. Get out." Jimin pleads with his eyes for her to let him stay. For him to explain everything so that she could finally remember. But Haeun simply walks to the front door and opens it. "Please...please Jimin just leave. I-I need some time to think. Please...just for right now..." Jimin doesn't move an inch from where he's standing.
For what seems like a couple minutes, they just stare at each other in silence, only the sound of their heavy breathing and sniffles. But eventually, Jimin realizes there's nothing he can do anymore...At least for right now.
So eventually, he forces his feet to take a step. And then another. And then a few more. Until he is out of the room. They both face each other, looking at the other's broken form, until the very last moment as Haeun slowly shuts the door.
But Jimin doesn't move away from the door. Neither does Haeun. They both collapse down, sitting against that door. Their backs would be touching if it weren't for that piece of wood separating the two.
Haeun can't get the mental image out of her head. Taehyung being dead... She can't stop thinking about it, but she tries to calm her out of control breathing.
Jimin can't get the image of Haeun crying of his head. He can't stop thinking about how hurt she must be, just on the other side of that door.
He thought that there was nothing more painful than seeing Haeun love another man. He thought that there was nothing in this world that could break his heart more than seeing her happy with someone else. But now...now he knew that he was mistaken.
He knew now that there was no greater pain than seeing Haeun in pain. He knew now that there was no greater pain that seeing the one he loves heartbroken.
Even if he wasn't the one that held her heart in his hands.
