It took days for Jase to get out of bed, and when he did he pushed himself through the pain and to the hospital. He refused to answer any phone call, retrieve any mail, pay any bill, or do anything but keep himself alive. He couldn't be selfish and let go just because he felt like it. He knew that he would hate himself for that, he knew that Jacob would hate him for that.
He got in the car, and kept his eyes on the road because he knew that if he let his thoughts wander that he would wander with them and melt away to nothing. It was only ten minutes, but it felt like the hardest and longest drive that Jase had ever driven.
He walked through the doors and took a deep breath, knowing that this would probably be the hardest thing that he would ever do. He couldn't break down crying, and he couldn't back down.
He walked up to the lady in the main office. He took another deep breath. He had baggy eyes, swollen from tears. "Uh-hello." He said way too fast. "Hi there, sir. Anything I can help you with?" She said, then looked up and tried hiding her shock. He was heartbroken, and looked it too. "I want to see Jacob Miller." Jase spit out. He had been practicing that line for many days, and still he could barely say it. The lady started typing on her computer, then looked up. "He's in the cancer unit, room twenty-eight. He seems to be getting better and will most likely make a full recovery."
Jase's heart stopped. He looked at the lady in awe. She must be mistaken, but nonetheless he started running-full on sprint-to the cancer unit. He ran faster than he had in his life, dodging doctors, nurses, and visitors. Hoping that Jacob would be just around the corner. He didn't let his mind think all the way that Jacob was alive walking these halls. But he sure did let a part of it think that. He turned the corner, "Hey, Story."
