Ivan hates it when people call him a communist, especially Alfred. He just wishes that everyone would realize that his country is thousands of years old, and it was only under a communistic rule for 74 years.
Ivan is actually jealous of other countries that were part of the Soviet Union, because even though they were under a communist rule, no one calls them 'commies.' That's why Ivan enjoys the company of the Baltic States, especially Toris. They were all under the U.S.S.R with him, and they remember the horror stories that came from the Gulag under Stalin, more clearly than the stories of the Concentration Camps under Hitler.
When Khrushchev took leadership and liberated millions of political prisoners from the prisons of Siberia, Ivan gained the hope that the bloodiness of those days were passing. He had seen so much bloodshed within these 74 years that his Bipolar disorder became much worse, and he would become very depressed at times. Toris would sometimes walk in on Ivan huddling in the corner as he tried to hold back tears, only to break down when Toris asked if something was wrong. Ivan so wakes up due to nightmares of those days that continue to haunt him.
Ivan wishes he could make Alfred realize that his country has not been ruled under a totalitarian government for the past 22 years, but he knows that Alfred would never pay attention'
Ivan just wishes that he had someone who would defend him while everybody else makes false accusations.
