(My headcanon)

I think everyone makes him out to be so badass that he's almost invincible. Remember, he's so tsundere he's almost 1p!Romano; he doesn't tell anybody anything and just goes on about life. But in the end... he ends up crying to himself in the corner of his room where nobody can find him because he's convinced himself he is worthless and doesn't deserve the help he needs.

He feels there was something he did that made everyone afraid of him. He doesn't know why people are afraid of his battle strategies, I mean, weren't they solely for self defence?

He doesn't know why. But he tries anyway.
