He was not born with the name 'Francis'. This name means 'Frenchman', but when Francis was born he wasn't technically a Frenchman. He was a Gaul. When Francis was born, his mother named him 'Gift of God' or 'Mazhe' because he was such a beautiful gift the lord had given to her.

When Francis finally had a son of his own, he wanted to honor his mother. He decided to call his son by what his mother wanted him to be called. Of course, Francis couldn't call him Mazhe as that was an old Celtic name that was no longer in use. So, he gave his son the more anglicized version.
