Due to his eye colour, and the locals being deeply religious, they thought Gilbert was some sort of relative to the devil. They used to throw their cutlery at him whenever he walked past them. They even once attempted to drown him. Feliks (Poland) then came and looked after him, keeping him away from the people that intended to murder him.
This all happened before 1309.
He was born in 1190.
