After Fritz died, Gilbert became very cold and distant toward everybody — he wasn't the loud and obnoxious guy that everyone was used to.
He was utterly crushed by Fritz's death, and was quite literally heart broken.
He was afraid of ever getting close to anybody for the fear of the same thing happening again...
Ludwig changed that completely.
