Alex's POV
I exhaled deeply, preparing myself for what was troubling Hayley. I've only known her for a day, but that doesn't deny the fact that I'm concerned. The sound of the girl sighing over the phone indicated that she was about to explain.
It was a long explanation, and a tragic one at that. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't almost cry at one point. No one as kind and beautiful as Hayley deserves this.
"It's okay if you wanna hang up or something, I must sound really pathetic right now" Hayley tried to joke, but the sadness in her voice was unmistakable
"No you're not pathetic. You are not ugly or stupid or a failure!" I told her "You shouldn't believe that you deserve those cuts! Those people who are dragging you down are below you for a reason. Trust me, I know what it's like to feel alone and unwanted, but then I met Jack and other amazing people, and now I'm the happiest I've ever been! I promise, we would never hurt you Hayley. Never"
It was a good few seconds before she replied.
"Thank you Alex" was all Hayley said. But it's okay, that's all I wanted to hear
"Anytime Hayls. Call me whenever you're feeling low. Okay?"
"Okay," she sounded a lot more better now. I smiled to myself; I love helping people and being the reason that people are feeling better. In the background, I heard a door opening and closing "My parents are back now, I have to go Alex!"
"Okay, bye Hayls!"
"Bye!" she hung up. I sat in my room, asking myself one question over and over again.
Why did she choose to call me over anyone else?

At 8:15 I was already waiting for Jack at the corner shop. As usual, he was late. I turned to start walking to school, before I heard fast footsteps approaching from behind me
"Lex! Waaaait!!" my best friend's voice was loud, as usual. Laughing, I came to a stop and waited for the dark haired boy to catch up.
"Woke up late again?" I asked, still chuckling
"Hehe, yeah" Jack guilty scratched the back of his head. We spent the walk to school listening to Sum 41 and messing around. It took us about 20 minutes to reach our destination. Phew, 5 minutes to spare until the bell.
"Look who's almost late again!" Jenna announced as Jack and I joined the gang in our usual spot. Hayley was also here. She gave me a small smile and I returned it. No one apart from Jack noticed. We all quickly burst into discussion again, talking about topics ranging from penguins to broccoli ice cream. The first bell rang, and we all split up to get to our classes.
