The cheerleaders weren't outside anymore.

Julia, Poppy and Darien were standing together at the threshold of the sports locker room and it was nearly dusk.

It was the game, Julia knew that, but everything seemed different tonight. Luke wasn't in the sports pavilion like every match to reserve seats for the group anymore. There was the sound of drizzling, but it was much louder than it should have been. It sounded like it sounded the day Robert went missing at the river.

It was hot, surprisingly. Not that it didn't get hot while it rained in London. Noah's scout from the Manchester United had sat beside the headmistress at the pavilion. Julia had noticed Noah standing in the locker room alone when she had got back, having done with her performance. He had rubbed his face with both hands as if he had been praying.

Julia might never think about it much but she knew Noah lived and breathed football. And if he was selected for the club, what would happen? Would he transfer somewhere far for the training? He would. Of course, he would.

Maybe it was for the good.

She and her friends began to move toward the sound of the rain without speaking, passing the empty corridors. The game was halfway when they reached.

The score was unbelievably against the Pristine today. The players of Santiago Upper school, the opponent college were two goals ahead anyway.

It might have been the most injurious Football match Pristine had ever come across. It probably was as close to descending into hell with no goals. In the last twenty minutes, Coach Lyman spotted Jonathan off his line and tried to direct him from the distance. He scored for the first time.

A phone rang in the distance but none of the girls moved from where they stood by the field, leaning against the railing of the sports pavilion.

The ball came to the defensive midfielder who poked it a few yards to Noah near the halfway line, outside the centre circle. As crazy as it sounded, Noah looked right at Coach Lyman as if speaking through eyes. It wasn't Julia's imagination either now that she stood, with her eyes boring into Noah.

He planted his left foot at an angle very close to the ball, left arm thrown to the side, and the right foot came through the ball like a golf stick. He passed it into the net – from more than 50 fucking yards. His precision was such that it hit the back of the net on the full. The area had gone almost silent and when Ibrahim ran to give Noah a hug, the crowd broke out, whooping, cheering, singing together. Noah grinned against Ibrahim's shoulder, his blond hair sticking on his forehead, glistening with sweat.
