Rachel's POV
Carl and I looked at each other before looking back at Zelda. She said she could get us out of here but we didn't know if we could trust her or not.
"Give us a minute." Carl told her before the two of us went to the corner. "Do you think we can trust her?"
"I don't think we have a choice." I told him. "It's either we sit here doing nothing or break out with her. Besides if there's even a chance she can help us kill Peter, save Ella and get back to Blake I think we have to risk it."
"What if she's just leading us into a trap?" He asked.
"It's possible." I said. "But if she is then we can take her."
"Um...I can hear you." We hear Zelda said. "And just so you know, it's not a trick."
"How can we trust you?" Carl asked.
We watch as Zelda turns around and pulls a key out of her back pocket with her hands cuffed behind her back.
"Turn around." She told us. "It'll unlock your handcuffs."
Carl and I did as Zelda told us and few moments later our hands were free. Then I took the key from her and unlocked her.
"How did you get the key?" I asked her.
"And why are you helping us?" Carl asked.
"I got the key because one of my friends gave it to me." She told us. "And I'm helping you because we don't agree with what Winston is doing to you guys."
"We?" I asked.
"Me and a couple of my friends that work here." She said. "We don't like how Winston is running things, so we came up with a plan to break you out."
"How?" Carl asked.
"Later tonight, one of my friends is gonna come and let us out." She told us.
"What about Ella?" I asked. "He took her right before you came in."
"We overheard him talking and he said that he'll deal with her tomorrow." Zelda told us. "Right now some of my friends are trying to save her. Then when we get out, we all meet outside and head to your place."
"We can't." Carl tells her. "He's been to Cliff House. He knows how many people we have, how are defenses are, where are weak points are. He could easily destroy the place."
"Carl's right." I said. "When he finds out we escaped he'll know exactly where we are and we'll be fucked."
"Then we'll have to find somewhere else to go." Zelda said. "But we can worry about that after we get out of here."
"So, when is your friend supposed to come get us out of here?" Carl asked.
"I don't know, but it should be soon." She told us.
"So since we're gonna be here for a while, why don't you tell us a little about yourself." I asked her.
"Before all this, I was just a normal kid from Massachusetts." She told us. "Back in Massachusetts, it was just me and my mother. About a year or two after everything happened we found this big group of horrible people we kept hearing about."
"How did you hear about them?" Carl asked.
"Every time we would find someone who was injured my mother would help them." Zelda said. "She was a nurse, and she taught me everything she knew. Every time we would ask them 'how did this happen' and they would always say 'it was the Blaze Tribe.' We kept hearing about them from everyone we helped, and one day we found them. They came to the house we were staying at and we tried to hide from them. But my mom knew that we couldn't hide from them. She told me to run, and I did. And when I turned around I saw them forcefully grab her and throw her in there truck before driving off." I watched her start to wipe away the tears that were forming in her eyes. "Then I just kept walking on my own until Winston and his people found me. Since I had some nursing experience he had me be there nurse, and that's what I did until I found out what they were doing to you."
"Wow." Carl spoke. "Did you ever find out what happened to her?"
"No." Zelda said. "I wanted to go and try to get her back, but I couldn't on my own. And if I tried to, I would probably get caught and she would have sacrificed herself for nothing."
"So that's why you're helping us." I said. "Because that's what your mother would have done."
She smiles and nods.
"She always saw the good in people and tried to help whenever she could." She said. "And so do I. That's why I want to help you guys get out of here."
Hearing everything that happened to her and her mother surprised me. That fact that she had her mother taken from her and she still sees the good in people. I can only hope that that's not what's gonna get her killed.
BOOM!!!
The sound of that eruption startled us all. We could feel the room shaking.
"Was that some kind of queue or something?!" Carl sked.
"I don't think so." Zelda said. "He said he could just unlock the door, not blow up the place."
I walked over to the door and pressed on it. It wouldn't open, but it felt like its hinges were lose.
"What if we push on the door?" I asked. "It feels lose and if we all push on it we might be able to get it open."
"Let's try it." Zelda said.
The three of us start pushing against the door. We can feel it almost give way, but it wasn't enough. We start hitting it with bodies at full force before finally breaking the door down.
"Where do we go now?" I asked Zelda.
"This way." She told us.
Carl and I follow Zelda as she leads us down the hall. It wasn't until we got outside that we saw smoke and fire all over the place.
"What happened?" Carl asked.
"I don't know, but we need to go." I said.
"We can't." Zelda said. "We have to wait for the others."
"We don't have time." I tell her. "You said it yourself that we were gonna meet them outside. They should know where to meet us."
"But..."
"We can wait for them for as long as we can, but when we can't wait anymore we'll have to go." I tell her.
She nods as we start making our way out of Augusta. We stopped when we saw one of Peter's guards with a gun aimed at us.
"Don't move!" He yelled. "I already killed one of your friends, don't make me kill you too!"
One of our friends? Was he talking about one of Zelda's friends or someone from Cliff House?
BANG!!!
