Blake's POV
"Blake!" I heard mom call. "You're gonna be late!"
I lazily opened my eyes and was greeted with the sun shining in bright through the window. I rolled out of bed and walked down the stairs still half asleep. I was greeted by my mother standing in the kitchen organizing all sorts of papers.
"Why aren't you dressed?" Mom asked me.
"I was up late last night." I told her.
"What could you possibly be doing alone in your room so late at...actually never mind, you're a teenager, I don't need to know." She told me. "Anyways, get dressed. Otherwise you'll be late for school."
I rolled my eyes and went back upstairs to get dressed. I would have showered, but I was already running late that I didn't have enough time. After I got dressed I went back downstairs, my mother was running around the house like a crazy lady.
"Now you know I have a meeting with Greg about expanding the wall, so I'll be back late." She told me as she ran around the house. "After school I want you to come straight home. I don't want to find out that you were hanging out with that Tommy kid again."
"He's not that bad." I told her. "And he's my best friend."
Tommy's actually my only friend. But I could never tell her that. If she found out that everyone is scared of her which makes them scared me, she'd show them something to be scared about.
"Do you know how many times I've caught him going over the wall? Too many." She told me. "A kid your age shouldn't have to see the things out there."
"I've seen what's out there before." I told her.
"And I wish you'd forget it." She told me. "Now go, you're gonna be late."
I rolled my eyes and walked away out the door. The school was a 10 minute walk from my house. And it wasn't really a school, more like a teacher's house. As I was making my way to school, Tommy ran up to me.
"Hey, man." He said. "What's up?"
"Same old." I told him.
"Your mom still a total bitch?" He asked.
"She's not a bitch." I told him. "She's just stressed because she has a lot on her plate."
"Whatever." He said rolling his eyes. "You know, I was gonna ask if you wanted to go over the wall after school, but I already know the answer."
"You know I want to." I told him. "But my mom would never let me."
"Then just don't tell her." He told me. "Sneak out after school and then sneak back in before she finds out."
