Chapter 12

Valerie’s P.O.V.

Ashton is fast asleep in the next three minutes. I smile to myself and get out of his bed without waking him up. I shut his bedroom door quietly and walk down the stairs. The music is still blaring loudly. I’m surprised Ashton can sleep through this. I look around the room and walk through the living room. They have a karaoke machine up and people are singing drunkenly and laughing.

“Valerie! Valerie! Where are you going?” Luke calls out.

I turn around and wait for him to catch up to me as he pushes through people.

“I’m going home.” I tell him. “Ashton’s asleep and I figured you were getting it on with someone-”

“No, no. Don’t leave, c’mon. The party’s just getting started. Hang out with me.” He says with a smile.

    “Are you drunk?” I ask.

“Not yet. But I won’t be if you want someone to hang out with. Ashton told me you’re not really big on people drinking.”

“Yet he decided to get totally wasted.”

Luke laughs. “Yeah, but he’s completely harmless when he’s drunk. He acts like a three year old.”

“I know.” I tell him with a smile. “I just experienced that until he crashed on his bed.”

Luke nods. “Well, I’ll stop drinking if you need some company.”

“Nah, you go ahead and have fun. I really should be getting home.” I tell him.

“Aw, c’mon Val. This is the biggest annual event around here. You’ve gotta stay. Everyone’s gonna be talking about it at school.”

“It’s alright.” I tell him. “It really is. Just um, go have fun.” I tell him with a reassuring smile. “I really should be getting home. My mom will freak out if I don’t show up until tomorrow morning.”

“It’s only like, one in the morning.” Luke says with a frown.

    “I’ll be fine.”

“Wait, do you need a ride?” Luke asks.

    “No, I can walk.”

    “How far do you live?”

    “Um…”

    “I’m driving you.”

    “Luke, you’ve been drinking.”

“Hey, even you know I’m sober.”

I shift to the side and bite down on my lip nervously. “I’m not sure that’s a great idea.”

“Well then what are you gonna do?” He asks, raising an eyebrow. “You refuse to stay here and you refuse to let me drive you and I refuse to let you walk back to your house in the middle of the night by yourself.”

“I just really don’t like the party environment. It makes me feel nervous and vulnerable and it freaks me out.” I admit.

“Go upstairs with Ashton. Call your mum. Tell her Ash’s car broke down and that I’ll drop you off tomorrow morning.”

    I nod slowly. “Okay.”

“And if you get immensely bored, come find me. Or I can just come upstairs with you now.”

“Can you just come with me now?” I ask.

“Yeah, sure.” He says, taking a drink of his beer and setting it on a table. “Let’s go.”
